Not too interesting

Not too interesting. The book title ' Country Boys' led me to belive the short stories would be Country - as in farm and ranch. Instead I found lots of words about rural (think west suburban) rather than true country living. Generally well-written but not what I expected.

Sorry, but I dont agree with other people reviewing this item.

The picture on the cover is what is best in the whole book. I did'nt find any story being more valuable than a quiclky written draft for porn-clip storyboard.
So many reitaring clichés : the same scene in different cheap paper-made landscapes. Played by cheap and untalented actors.
Where is "Country" ? Where are the Boys ?
Well, it's always interesting to read failed books or to see failed movies : makes think why it lacks any quality and what makes a written story or a movie good.

One of the best collections of this kind

"Country Boys" is one of the best collections of this kind that I have ever read. Dale Chase's "Laying By" alone is worth the price of the book. These stories are full of poignancy and eros, joy and excitement, desire and the search for true love which is occasionally fulfilled. In general terms the stories are of high quality, and often draw the reader into a wonderland of sweet fantasy which is by no means limited to what is sexual.

Pleasantly Surprised!

I was pleasantly surprised by The New Recruit and how much I enjoyed it! The story was really interesting and, while there were a few things I personally didn't agree with, overall it was a really good book.

While I did at times find Spencer annoying (mainly the way he acted regarding girls), I still liked him and most of the other main characters.

The whole "Mission League" was very intriguing and I loved all of the spy "gadgets" - especially the contacts. :)

I don't know whether or not there is going to be a sequel to The New Recruit, but I'm hoping there will be because some things didn't seem finished at the end of this book...and I really liked this story and didn't want it to end yet. :)

If you enjoy YA books with some spy-ness in it and don't mind the fact that people have prophecies/visions in it, I think you might like this book.

Williamson's new release will be enjoyed by boys and girls alike!

I was really excited to read this new release by Jill Williamson. I've read two previous books by her and really enjoyed them both. While I can't say TheNew Recruit was my favorite by her (Replication gets that spot! ;-), it definitely was a fun and entertaining read and is the beginning to what seems to promise an adventurous series that will appeal to teen boys and girls alike.

I really liked the main character, Spencer Garmond. He was just such a...a really normal, average teen guy! In my opinion (as a girl!) Williamson nailed the whole "guy attitude" on the head with Spencer! Seriously, it was awesome! And his sense of humor had me laughing several times. So much fun to read!

If there was one draw-back to The New Recruit for me it was Arianna. I'm sorry, but she was just plain annoying! I was more annoyed with her then Spencer was (that should tell you a lot, for those who have read this book!). While I commended her on wanting to witness to Spencer, she just had too much of a cram-salvation-down-your-throat-till-you-choke approach to sharing the gospel. It was really annoying.

Please don't take the previous paragraph as saying that I didn't like this book. I did! It earned 4 stars from me, and earned every one of them! While Arianna just rubbed me wrong, everything else about The New Recruit I found enjoyable. And the range of people that will like this book is very broad--boys and girls, young and old. I don't know what Williamson has in store for Spencer next, but I look forward to discovering it as the series continues.

Get it! You'll love it!!

First of all, like what I said in my review of Andrew Klavan's Mindwar book(well I actually don't say this, but I meant to.), I had to get a hard copy of this book. With e-books of certain stories, it takes me a long time to finish the stories. But if I have a hard copy of the book, I'll eventually finish the baby. And when I did, I immediately craved for the next book! It was so good! I had read the first half on the e-book, but then I stopped reading and didn't read it until a year had past(oopsies!). So I ordered a hard copy of the book off of Amazon(;)), and once it came home, I started it over again. And about two weeks later(when I wasn't working, sleeping, or..stuff that kept me from the book..), I had finished it! Yay!! Can't wait to catch up with Spencer and the gang in the next book! Outstanding job, Jill!!!! I love your books!!!

This book looks like yet another financial guide to retirement. Written by two wealth managers, that is what is should be. But they have taken another path, that leads to a completely unique and special book. When an affluent person gets into middle age, he or she looks forward to decades of practical life. If you have enough money to meed your needs, the questions you need to ask are the ones they ask--how do you plan for the next chapter of your life, how do you expand and grow after middle life? this is a book about life planning. Krysty and Moser begin each chapter with a simple question, and they highlight a major theorist or idea. Then they tell a story of a real person who has done something special in their later life. Then, they move from concept to "what do you do" and offer worksheets, reflective questions and tools to help you apply that concept to your own life. This is an example of a deeply interactive book, that you can use to help you develop your own path. And, until the last chapter, is it not about money, but about relationship, values, life goals and self discovery.

It's not your father's retirement anymore...

So, I'm 65 and I'm retired. I'm obviously part of the baby boomers. My financial plans are well organized. I've got advisers. I'm happy and healthy. Yet, when I read this book I realized I still had some stuff to think about and look at. Kaycee and Bob offer so many small tidbits to think about as you contemplate retirement or you are moving through it. And though this book is geared to high net worth individuals, there is enormous value for those who are just working stiffs trying to get ready for retirement. I can't recommend this short but stimulating guide to "not your father's retirement".

The book seemed poorly edited with somewhat lame examples of whom or what constitutes a successful life. I bought it used for $1.25 from Seattle Goodwill and didn't overpay by more than about a buck.

Not afraid to take a stand

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting as I haven't heard of Johnny B. Truant before. I downloaded this because it sounded interesting and it was free at the time through the Kindle store.

It's a short book. It's not a step-by-step book giving you instructions (that you probably wouldn't follow anyway) on how to live a better life. It's more of a gentle smack upside the head that says get over yourself and start living. It gives you a perspective that we seem to not be able to see when we get caught up in the minutia of everyday life.

Straightforward and very readable!

Like other works by this author, it is short and has a simple, worthwhile point to make. It is by no means a deep philosophical work which follows a rigorous path through the complexities of that field of study. It is intended to be more of a slap upside the head about a point of living that we may have missed.

Positively touch other people in a meaningful way, and you may be surprised by the results of your small ripples in the limited timeline of our short life may have eventually produced!

I would highly recommend this 13 page read to anyone who could use a slight change in their perception about the impact that our life can have on others.

At least this one had a storyline

I think this one is the second best of the floor. This one was an essay about death and living, built on the event of his grandfathers death. With a touch and then explanation of the first essay at the end of this one.

I think if you read the first one, and this one, you could skip the other two.

I am coming late to the Alex Rider series as my oldest son is only seven. This is the second Alex Rider book that I've read, for the purpose of understanding when my spy-obsessed son might be old enough to start reading the series.

I enjoyed reading this book. It obviously lacks the complexity and depth of a book written for adults, but it is still a fast paced and enjoyable thriller that borrows heavily on the James Bond and Mission Impossible franchises. Alex Rider makes a likable hero who is brave, tenacious and resourceful.

I would feel comfortable giving it to my son to read when he's a little older - my gut feel is 9-10 years would be about right. He still needs to strengthen his reading skills (words like interrogation, hyperventilating, cloying, claustrophobic and exquisite are typical), but also to develop the maturity to cope with a plot that involves a fair amount of violence (the book opens with the death of Alex's uncle and bad guys get shot on a regular basis).

Here are some things that parents may like to know about this book:
- The storyline is reasonably simple and the bad guy/good guy lines are clearly drawn.
- Violence is not described in overly graphic detail, but it does occur throughout the book. Alex fires a gun twice and hits a bad guy on one occasion. He also causes the death of another villain by causing a plane crash.
- There is no swearing or bad language.
- There is a noticeable absence of positive female characters (unless you count the housekeeper who barely appears). There is a reference by the MI5 (the English equivalent of the FBI) regarding female agents predominantly being of use if you need to slip someone in as a secretary or receptionist.

Well written and absorbing YA novel

YA novel that's well written and absorbing. I was reading this on the bus one day and missed my stop because I was engrossed in the book. I'm an adult who likes to read YA from time to time and found this one a fun read. Good, tight writing, that keeps the plot going in a steady pace. It makes the idea of a 14-year-old MI-6 spy very believable along with the impossible scrapes he gets into. He's a normal teenager but with a good head on his shoulders. It's a nice break from the usual teenage girl assassin/vampire hunter/whiny-romance YA novels out there.My only quibble is I wish Alex's character was a tad more developed. I'm hoping it will get better as I read the other books in the series.

A favorite among kids and adults alike

This is one of those books that everyone loves. All four of my siblings and I agree that it is one of the greatest series out there, and getting us to agree on anything is near impossible. The storyline is easy enough to follow, but may be too graphic for younger readers. It is about a spy, so there is a small amount of violence (nothing too graphic, but probably too much for an advanced 7 year old reader). Also, although the storyline is simple, some of the words are a bit advanced. Kids and adults alike love this book. It is the beginning of one of the best series. If you are planning on reading this, plan on many months and many more books, because you won't ever want it to end.
