I knew Dr. Harper when she was an undergraduate student and can confirm that her unwillingness to tolerate BS, stuffed shirts, dogma and pretension continues to be a salient and cheering aspect of her personality. This book is proof. If you're searching for the best advice on higher education - and these days the best advice is of the hard-nosed, straight-shooting, Janice Harper variety - get this book and read it twice. Or three times. Whatever it takes to persuade you that graduate school is a business full of business types who play by rules you need to know and thoroughly understand. If you already think you do, buy this book anyway, read it, and discover how thoroughly wrong you were.
Brief, blunt and invaluable, Harper has written a playbook on getting into a graduate school that fits your needs, not your fantasies. As such, it will not only save you time and much money, but more importantly, possibly your career. Harper takes you on a journey through the maze of criteria necessary to get into a graduate school and carefully points out the ramifications of careless decisions and naive assumptions. She's been there and worked there, so this brief but detailed roadmap is both accurate and a potential life saver. Her advice on doing online research is invaluable. Her emphasis on the importance of a well-written application essay equally so. Read it in an hour, study it for a week. Then make some wise choices.
I was asked once to edit an application essay written by a close friend to be submitted to Georgetown University. It was so poorly written and the author so thoroughly enamored of his own efforts that I returned it unedited, as I didn't think such a poor writer displaying such unmerited self-esteem would survive the rigors of a Georgetown graduate program. His grades and references were excellent; he didn't get in. Had he read Janice Harper's "How to Get Into Grad School", I think he would have spent much more time prepping his application and much less time his ego. After a year of waiting, he went to work for 3M, selling plastic lids.
Don't be him.
Like Ms. Harper, I'll give it to you straight: This book is an incredible - and I mean Incredible - bargain. Buy it and know that you've purchased a true roadmap and cautionary tale written with wit, verve and great style. In short, a lifesaver for less than half the cost of a bad latte. You can't beat that anywhere.

I enjoyed the tips on recommendation letters and getting funding. The book boosted my confidence and really made me realize that I can go to grad school if I really have the drive to, no matter what my GRE scores.

Great Insider Advice

Really glad I decided to buy this book (kindle version). Finished it really quickly and learned a lot of secret knowledge that I would NOT have known otherwise--like how to start a relationship with a professor (or two) before you even submit your application and how much that will help you in the long run, and a ton of other helpful tips. I was feeling so lost and overwhelmed by trying to tackle applying to grad school but now I feel a little more clear on what I have to do and how to do it. Only thing I wish is that it was a little longer!! Other than that, the author is experienced, down to earth, and approachable. Awesome.

great book!

I was given a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Caleb....poor Caleb, he's such a tool! What a manipulating user of women! Gambling, drinking, womanizing tool. That's what he is. And yet I like him. I want him to be better, to get better, to be more than he is. I think I would have disliked him more if he was going after more than one woman at a time, thankfully he wasn't, because I would have cheered at some of the bad stuff that happened to him.

This was a really long book, but the detail that was put into it was amazing. I liked it because you could tell a guy had written it. It was a paranormal book about vampires, but that wasn't the focus of the book entirely. The vampires weren't the normal sparkly, romantic, seductive swoon-over types of vampires that we've become used to through Twilight and Lestat. No, the vampires were what they most likely really should be: hunters and users. This book portrays them closer to the original Dracula and yet, not quite so romanticized.

The whole book had a very dark feel to it. This isn't the Age of Enlightenment that I'm used to reading about in romance novels, where all the "bad stuff" like bad hygiene and the lack of proper sewerage containment and thievery is just ignored. No, this book brings it all to the forefront, so if you can't handle the dark side of what life was like back then, don't read the book.

The twists in it I couldn't foresee and they completely took me by surprise. Overall, its a great book, just very very long.

Excellent dark, historical story

Caleb is a thief, womanizer, and gambler and is basically not a good guy. He ends up being likable anyway and I found myself rooting for him to get his life figured out. There is sort of a slow build to the story. In the beginning, I wasn't sure where it was going, but the author paints a vivid picture of what Caleb's life is like. The story alternates with Caleb's earlier life and it shows how he became the person he is at present. It is so well done that you can't help but read on to get all the pieces of the puzzle to try to figure Caleb out. There are some excellent twists that I didn't see coming. It is a long book, but I was disappointed when it ended because I wanted more. The second book is out already (which is good because I need to read it) and a third book is due out in the new year. It is hard to categorize, but don't let that stop you from checking it out!

AMAZING!!!!

I rarely write reviews, but I can't believe no one else has. What a great story this was. A must read if you like dark stories that are definitely well thought and intricately built. This man's discovery of a new facet to the world, just as he is trying to close the circle he has been on for two decades is wonderful. The back and forth from his youth to his present are so well done. best book I've read in a long time.

The Holy Piby was written by Robert Athlyi Rogers, who founded an Afrocentric religion in the US and West Indies in the 1920s. Rogers' religious movement, the Afro Athlican Constructive Church, saw Ethiopians (in the Biblical sense of Black Africans) as the chosen people of God, and proclaimed Marcus Garvey, the prominent Black Nationalist, an apostle. The church preached self-reliance and self-determination for Africans.

The original is very rare. There are no copies listed in either the Library of Congress or the University of California catalogs, which is highly unusual. The Holy Piby was banned in Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands in the middle and late 1920s. Today the Holy Piby is acclaimed by many Rastafarians as a primary source.

I read this book in one sitting. Nicely written and fun to read it had lots of laugh out loud moments in it. It is light and entertaining and Olive's characters come to life in each chapter. I was sorry when it came to an end. I hope the author will continue writing in this vein and look forward to her next book.
