About the Author
Georges Bataille, French essayist and novelist, was born in 1897. He converted to Catholicism, then to Marxism, and was interested in psychoanalysis and mysticism. As curator of the municipal library in Orleans, he led a relatively simple life, although he became involved, usually on the fringes, with the surrealist movement. He founded the literary review Critique in 1946, which he edited until his death in 1962, and was also a founder of the review Documents, which published many of the leading surrealist writers. His writing is a mixture of poetry and philosophy, fantasy and history, and his first novel, Story of the Eye, was written under the pseudonym of Lord Auch. Bataille's other works include the novels Blue of Noon, L'Abbé C and My Mother, and the volumes of essays Eroticism and Literature and Evil.

A Necessary Evil

In standardly written stories, conflict is not a convenience as much as it is a necessary component. What are stories, then, but places where authors create needless or unnecessary conflicts for their characters to overcome so as to either progress the plot or develop the personality traits of said protagonists? As such, aren't all stories, in a sense, evil? After all, could a story that didn't include a sense of conflict actually entertain? Furthermore, could a story, absent of evil, actually engage an audience for hours on end?

Think of a story that did not have any conflict in it whatsoever: a place or setting where all people lived in a state of peace. Admittedly, it is a difficult thing to do. For, in such a peaceful setting, where conflict does not occur, there is no story. In order for an author to create a story, they would first have to disrupt this sense of peace. They would then need to implement an oppressive form of power (an antagonistic entity), calling for the creation of conflict between characters, which could then be resolved through the shaping of some type of narrative structure. In a sense, creating a story (more importantly, one with a plot) is the act of putting power conflicts in the place of calm and peaceful settings.

Though many postmodern writers (and other writers still interested in experimentation) have attempted to create seemingly plot-less stories that do not rely on the creation of conflict, it is currently rare to see authors' stories be centered around peaceful settings. And those stories that are, are generally not ones that are going to be seen as entertaining in the eyes of an audience. Though it is possible to create stories without conflicts, it is difficult to keep an audience engaged or entertained by such a story for any prolonged period of time. Peaceful stories, where no conflict occurs, are generally ones where boredom is abound: ones where audiences generally become disinterested or disengaged through a lack of basic literary plot elements.

From this, we can see why Bataille claims that literature is evil. Literature must be evil in order to exist and engage an audience. Evil must occur to create conflicts for characters to overcome, pushing both the plot as well as the progression of a protagonist's personality (for the personality of the protagonist is ultimately shaped by his or her antagonistic "Other"). After all, what memorable hero is without his arch-nemesis? What mythic man is without his slain monster?

Since society is a power system, it is no surprise to see why people have become so receptive to seeing power struggles. Still, isn't it ironic to see how much more people appreciate power as opposed to a sense of peace in their stories? Though it is true that literature tends to focus on that which is fictitious, isn't it interesting to see how much of our fiction is influenced by fact? In other words, isn't it noteworthy to see how much of the excitement and meaning we find in such stories comes from our own power-based social predicaments: where peace is misplaced since it cannot stir, excite, or entertain an audience of people as prominently as power can through the creation of needless conflicts, which can then be overcome through the creation of heroic entities after whom we all aspire? It seems that the story shapes the man as much as the man shapes the story.

In this stimulating prequel to Lawton's acclaimed Inspector Troy series (Black Out; Old Flames; etc.), London is in the middle of the blitz and 25-year-old Freddie Troy is a Scotland Yard sergeant, chafing at the limits of his post. As the novel begins, he is relegated to the background, the focus instead on a gawky American named Calvin Cormack, who has come to London to help find and debrief Wolfgang Stahl, a top aide to Hitler's SS chief, Heydrich, and a spy for the Americans who has been forced to flee Germany for England to avoid capture, carrying with him plans for the imminent German invasion of Russia. The seriously spooked Stahl disappears into the vast underground system of bombed-out London, accessible only to Walter Stilton, a wonderfully bluff old copper. Calvin (whose father is a U.S. senator working with Charles Lindbergh and the America First group to keep the U.S. out of the war) is quickly absorbed into the large Stilton family, winning the affections of oldest daughter Kitty, also a police officer. Kitty, as it happens, was previously involved with Freddie Troy (and hasn't given him up entirely); Freddie's ties to the family and Calvin become more complicated when tragedy strikes and Freddie is drawn into the search for Stahl. Lawton meshes comedy and suspense with skill and energy, and seamlessly mixes fictional creations with real characters like H.G. High-ranking spy Wolfgang Stahl flees Berlin, and his American contact, Captain Cal Cormack, teams up in a transatlantic odd couple with hardy Chief Inspector Stilton, following the desultory trail of the turncoat Nazi and sundry other German spies and assassins dodging about the ruined hulks and malodorous bomb shelters of London. On the gangly frame of these Buchanesque exploits hang intriguing snippets of history, a bit of social comedy, and a teeming cast of odd birds, such as Winston Churchill's ballistics-whiz brother Bob and randy Kitty, "either naked or getting naked." Troy of the Murder Squad is attacked with a potato peeler whilst playing his rather incidental role. The suspense is fairly slack, and moments of gravity tend to ring hollow amid all the chipper stoicism, but no matter: there's a war on, mate! It's equally riveting whether it's called 'Riptide' or 'Bluffing Mr. Churchill'

John Lawton's highly enjoyable Frederick Troy series stands out for several reasons. Troy, the son of a powerful newspaper publisher, doesn't quite fit into the stereotypical English mold. As to be expected, he is literate and articulate, cultured and almost moral, but our Freddie is no James Bond or even Albert Campion. He is merely Freddie, caught between his Russian heritage and the English environment, his education and his own inclinations.

'Bluffing Mr. Churchill' (or `Riptide' in Britain) is set in a wartime London. And Frederick Troy is for most of the novel a minor character. (Lawton, it appears enjoys tweaking the 'rules' of series writing: his Troy novels aren't chronological, Troy we're told at one point resembles James Mason [shudder, so not the alpha hero!], sympathetic characters sometimes fall afoul of the villains, and Troy doesn't always make the best decisions.) And here, the majority of the novel is devoted to other characters.

Briefly, 'Bluffing Mr. Churchill' is the story of Captain Cal Cormack, a bespectacled and seemingly ingenious American soldier and his partner, Chief Inspector Stilton, possibly the most delightful copper the reader will ever encounter. The pair is trying to beat Nazi assassins to Wolfgang Stahl, an American-run German agent who is somewhere in London.

Lawton's 1941 London comes alive. The devastation of the air raids, the pervading grief at the loss of life among both civilians and the military, the disruption of the social order and the undermining of the certainty that life as it has been will continue are carefully juggled with the English ability to find honor and courage and humor in the worst of situations. Lawton's novel is in many ways an entertaining social history rendered with sympathy and humor.

Five Stars. The bottom line: `Bluffing Mr. Churchill' is indeed a well written mystery set in World War II London and should have great appeal for those who enjoy period mysteries, but it is so much more. It is also a striking portrait of London and its people.

Since Lawton's novels sometimes have different titles in Britain and the USA, and since they're not written in a strict chronological order, here are two lists that may help; no promises, but I think I got it right.

Great product line

Teaching Textbooks is my favorite math curriculum! They are very good with breaking each problem and process down and explaining even the most complex math concepts in a way that makes it very easy to understand.
It is also very nice to have a breakdown of each problem in the book. So if you are needing help, or just not understanding a problem, there is a COMPLETE explanation of how to solve it.

I have used a number of math curriculum, including those used by the public schools, and they have t tendency to jump form one concept to another. Just when you are starting to get the hang of a math concept, they jump you to something completely different. I do not do well like that.

This curriculum does a great good job of breaking up the concepts and ordering so that you are not jumping all over the place from concept to concept. and by then end, you have a complete understanding of the concepts.

So often math is taught in a "Monkey see Monkey do" fashion. The problem with this is that when you need to use this concept in a more complex operation, you do not really understand what you are doing, and how it contributes to the overall problem. This curriculum helps the student to gain a full understanding of the math concepts. They give full explanations and walk through each step of the problem. They always tell you why we do it in a certain way, and how it is getting you the correct answers. They never leave you in the dark.

It is not that this math is easy, but that they do such a good job of helping the student/s learn and "UNDERSTAND" the concepts, that it makes it feel easy.

The book's language finds a healthy balance between providing detail medical information and not overwhelming the reader. The tone is concise and to the point. No fluff.

I always approached ab workout as a fast movement using ab mat or GHD sit-up, not as a strength exercise. Taking the hip flexor out of the ab workout makes a huge difference. I thought my abs were in a good condition and strong till I tried his recommended Leg raise. I am going to incorporate his recommended ab exercise into my routine.

What can I say? In a classic Pavel style he keeps it simple but gives you the details. As you would expect you are not going to get 1001 ab exercises. You just get what works and he tells you why. The man knows what he is talking about so listen !

Great story that moves along smoothly. Well-developed characters with lots of variety of sex. Just the right splash of emotions an angst of lead character who is 18 at time of story. Very easy to read with lots of gay sex! Lear captures the emotions and changing situations of our hero and has interesting characters that come along for the ride. "Excuse the pun!" I wasn't disppointed.

aw heck, who am I kidding? "Homo-eroticism" my tail; it's hot sex! Intelligently and also beautifully written this novel does NOT disappoint on ANY level. I'll be buying ALL of James Lear works now, along with a "Do Not Disturb" sign to go on my door. Keep it coming Sir! My ONLY regret, is that Palace Of Varieties is not MY autobiography.

There ARE viable opportunities out there -- and the author KNOWS where they are!

It seems like a great opportunity until you see the part where they want you to send them $25 or $150 or $300 to get all the "supplies" you'll need to stuff 3,000 envelopes...

Yet, somewhere in the back of mind, you're thinking: "Hey! SOMEbody's gotta be making money online! All those little advertisements in the margins have GOT to be paying off -- at the very LEAST for the 'ad-space landlords' -- or they wouldn't keep puttin' 'em on my FaceBook pages!"

Well, author Lee Evans ("Killer Work from Home Jobs") agrees... She uses some failsafe formulas that she's developed over the years to determine if any particular offer of work online is worth checking out or not. She takes into consideration things like:

Similar to many others, my family has been hit hard by the current economy. Hoping to make a few extra dollars online during my spare time, I stumbled upon this book after a friend posted it on his Facebook. I thought I would drop a quick review after going through it and checking out the recommended sites.

The links for the business directory were all active and current. After going through all of them, I found a couple that fit my talents. I am now beginning my first venture online with an optimistic feeling. The book is direct and to the point and doesn't include fluff like so many other offerings. I will recommend this one to my friends.

Now take a deep breath, get ready to have your life changed, and pick it up again. This is literally the ultimate resource for work at home jobs. The author did an amazing job of researching the current work from home opportunities - over a range of categories. I'm a writer so I was mostly interested in the at home writing jobs, but I glanced over the rest of the categories as well and everything kept the high level of quality that I found in the writing section.

Killer Work From Home Jobs is a directory of the top legitimate telecommuting positions and companies of 2012. Will this information be relevant a few years from now? Surprisingly, I think it will be. All the companies mentioned are either Fortune 500 companies or connected to them - so they aren't going away anytime soon. Nevertheless, there's already a second edition of the book out (here Killer Work from Home Jobs 2: 100 Fortune 500 & Legitimate Work at Home Jobs - How to Make Money Online from Home! (Job Search Series)) that provides updates for the jobs listed in this one, with some completely new opportunities on top of that.
