Clive Cussler takes the editorial helm from James Patterson in this follow-up to Thriller (2006). This volume again features another impressive line-up of crime writers, some household names (Phillip Margolin, Ridley Pearson) and some lesser-knowns (Javier Sierra, Harry Hunsicker). All are members of the International Thriller Writers, the organization that came up with the concept for the series. What’s different in this second compilation is that this time most of the familiar authors leave their established characters at home and strike out in new directions. So while David Hewson delivers a taut, exciting story, it isn’t about his Roman detective Nic Costa. Thrillers are not an easy genre to define, as Cussler points out in his introduction, as it has more to do with pace than with plot. But that’s good news for readers, who will enjoy such diverse story types as international intrigue (Jeffrey Deaver’s “The Weapon”), suspense (Hewson’s “The Circle”), and even a blend of political thriller and science fiction (Kathleen Antrim’s “Through a Veil Darkly”). The twenty three tales included in this collection are for the most part excellent and timely. The anthology opens with Jeffery Deaver's "The Weapon" focusing on torture while Lisa Jackson's "Vintage Death" contains several terrific thriller twists. "The Circle" by David Hewson will indirectly remind readers of the London bombings as a pregnant woman riding the tube hears a passenger mumbling "They will remember my name." Marcus Sakey's "The Desert Here and the Desert Far Away" examines how strong the bond the band of brothers forged in the battlefields of the Iraq War survives once everyone is stateside. Gary Braver's "Ghost Writer" was once a famous novelist, but now writes stories for other people to "author" as that pays better though leaves him depressed. Finally with Carla Neggers, Joan Johnston, Robert Ferrigno, Jon Land, R.L. Stine, and Lisa Jackson amongst others contributing, THRILLER 2 lives up to its subtitle of "stories you can't put down".

Another Thriller Of A Book!

I read the first Thriller and enjoyed it immensely. Thriller 2 is even
better. There were several stories that grabbed my attention. "The Weapon"
by Jeffery Deaver had a stunning ending. "Remaking" by Blake Crouch was a
very good story. "The Circle" written by David Hewson will frighten you.
"Roomful Of Witnesses" by R.L. Stine has a novel approach. "The House On
Pine Terrace" by Philip Margolinleaves you wondering who is good and who is bad. "The Lamented"by Lawrence Light was a very god story. Through Light I discovered a new author. "Vintage Death" by Lisa Jackson takes a
close up look at a California wine dynasty. "Suspension Of Disbelief" offers a different look at the world of a writer. "A Calculated Risk "
gives you an interesting look at the world of doublecrossing. "The Fifth
World" by Juan Sierra shows the end of the world according to Mayan lore. "Ghost Writer" by Gary Braver was another interesting story in this book."Through A Veil Darkly" gives you a unique look at the Presidency.
"Bedtime For Mr. Li' by Davifd Montgomery is an interesting of a professional killer. "Killing Time" by Jon Land was an outstanding story about a contract killer on the run from the authorities. Be sure to read
"Thriller 2". This is a very good book.

Good Easy Read Money Well Spent

As a history teacher I don't typically read fiction. I came across this book at a time when I happened to be in the mood for some light fiction reading. The stories can be read in 20-30 minutes and although I have not read them all the first 10 have all been good and have exposed me to authors that I would probably never have read otherwise. A very good investment for those times when you might be between other works and/or not certain what you want to read next.

{My thoughts} – Everyone is aware of the game that individual’s like to play called Marco Polo. One person says Marco and another says Polo. The individual that says Marco is suppose to find the individual that says Polo without being able to physically see them. This game is often played in bodies of water. Marco Polo the explorer is whom the game is named after.

Marco Polo was a born a merchant in Italy. He came from a family of merchants and it was ll he every knew and was taught. When he turned 17 he made a trip with his father and his Uncle to China. They spent a great number of years there working on a ruler named Kublai Khan. Khan was feared by those his armies had overthrown. However, he appeared to be a just and reasonable ruler based on the information recorded by Marco Polo on his travels with his family.

Marco Polo had kept vivid noted of everything he saw, he learned and he did while he was traveling. He had no real reason to keep all the notes, other then that he’d wanted to. It was a good thing that he did though because his notes and the things he learned became really useful for others that wanted to travel a similar journey.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading many more books in this series.

This series of books by Joan Holub are PERFECT! 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade and up! Pictures and larger print help so much when getting a young 9yr old to read about history. When they are a bit older, this is a great book for them to read alone and be captivated! The facts are spot on and it is so helpful when not going into WAY TOO MUCH detail about something you know your kid will never remember! It is just the right amount of story to make them reading it possible! Strongly recommend any of her books in this area. Thank you Joan! Now keep coming out with more!! :)

Easy, breezy read

Her fiancé killed in a duel, Anya Hamilton is content wallowing in her grief and running the family's plantation. The man who killed Jean, Ravel Duralde, returns to New Orleans and promptly gets challenged to a duel when he *accosts* Anya at a masked ball. Desperate to prevent it so that her sister's intended isn't killed as well, Anya cooks up a hair-brained scheme to kidnap Ravel and hold him captive at the family plantation. Being a romance novel, you just know sparks are a-gonna start flying between the two, but things get complicated when it appears that someone wants one of them dead - or is the mysterious "boss" after both of them?

As much as I enjoyed Blake's Love's Wild Desire, this one didn't work as well for me. The whole prisoner bit was a tad bit hard to swallow, as was Anya's penchant for running out into the dark streets to strange houses inhabited by bad people, only for Ravel to rescue her so they can have hot sex. Wash, rinse, repeat. :(

I liked the New Orleans setting, and I enjoyed the way Blake uses her knowledge of the city and its culture to immerse the reader into her world. Anya is definitely not a TSTL heroine, but you will want to strangle her at the way she keeps walking into one dangerous situation after another. One big change between this one written in the 1980s and LWD written in the 1970s is the sex is a lot more prevalent and in your face than the earlier book. While still tame compared to what I've seen in some of today's romances this is not the first time I've noticed this pattern with other authors who wrote in both those decades. This is a quick, easy read and should do nicely when one is in the mood for some brain candy or a beach read.

Very good read.

If you like historical romances, then this is definitely THE ONE for you. It has all the components of love, drama, action and theatrics. Very interesting main plots and subplots. High enjoyable- so good that I read it twice. I have also read several of Jennifer Blake's other novels and this one is much much much better. The newer material she's writing is quite bland to the stuff she was putting out during the 80's. This book has a lot of passion and more importantly, wit. Interesting characters. Loved this novel!

a little better than the typical romance schlock

I liked this book more than the average romance because the lead heroine, Anya, has more strength and verve than what this genre normally offers. She runs her own plantation and has business instincts, yet she is still vulnerable and looking for love. The sex scenes were a little boring, and the dialogue seemed strained and silly at points (at the end of the book, for example, she asks her lover if he hates her). In all, though, the book was enjoyable and worth it's price. But I wouldn't have paid much more for it.

Is this even a real book? Grammar is awful, sentence structure is awful and content is severely lacking. I can't believe the book has such a high price, no one should buy this. Should be zero stars but I was forced to give it at least one star.

The heroine did stupid things putting herself in danger. The murderer had too many episodes of convenient luck.

STORY BRIEF:
Lisa and Mitch were attorneys working for the same law firm in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They fell in love and were engaged. Then Mitch decided to leave the law practice and move to Alaska to run a lodge/resort which he recently inherited. Lisa did not want to go and broke up with him. This book starts one year later. The senior partner in the law firm is deciding which of three candidates to promote to senior partner. Lisa is one of them. He books a trip to Mitch's resort for the three junior partners plus himself and his wife. He wants to see them doing challenging outdoor activities before making up his mind. Someone pushes Lisa into the river rapids. She almost dies but Mitch rescues her. She and Mitch decide not to tell anyone she was pushed until they can figure out who did it and why. The rest of the story is about the group's activities and some more bad things happening while Mitch and Lisa attempt to uncover the culprit.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
This is classified as romantic suspense, but the romance is not very much and is not typical for romance novels. We don't get to see a couple meeting and developing a relationship. This story starts with a couple who broke up. During the story, they slowly reconnect while trying to solve a mystery and avoid being killed. This is primarily a mystery suspense story. There are no sex scenes which is unusual for contemporary writing labeled romantic suspense.

The first half was above average, but I had some problems with the plot and events during the second half. Three things bothered me.

Someone cut a leather line. We never learned who did it or how they did it without being seen. A group watched as someone set up the sleds and lines. A few minutes later the race started. Someone would have had to cut the line in front of the group during that couple of minutes. That was never answered.

Someone has been trying to kill Lisa. Yet she does two things that make it easy for the killer to attempt killing her again. As she is doing those two things I'm shaking my head saying that is stupid. I would never have done those things, being alone and/or putting myself at risk in those ways. Those two things hurt the story the most. I was also annoyed that Lisa and Mitch did not inform the sheriff or let him help them investigate. The results were obstructing an investigation, delaying it's start, and withholding evidence. That too was stupid.

I also did not like the way the author made it so easy for the killer. Each attack was based on convenient opportunity, not planning. The killer would see someone alone and then attack. Yet to everyone else it looked like an accident or self inflicted. How convenient for the killer. I would think most killers have to carefully plan to get that result as well as being lucky. They don't just happen to see multiple opportunities to do this and get away with it each time. I need a little more realism.

exhilarating romantic suspense

The teambuilding event planned by Carlisle, Bonner & Associates at the Duck Lake Lodge near Bear Bones, Alaska could prove divisive as managing partner Graham Bonner will use the off site to choose the next senior partner. One of the three attorneys in the running for a senior slot is Lisa Vaughn, who feels strongly this is not a good way to select. She also has bigger personal issues with the location chosen by top management that overlooks the Wild River where her mom and baby sister drowned twenty-six years ago and the lodge is owned by Mitch Baxter, her former fiancé who dropped her last year when he relocated from Fort Lauderdale.

Lisa falls into the Wild River with its strong rapids. Mitch knows something is wrong and follows her by kayak until he jumps in to complete the rescue. The powerful current had carried the pair several miles from his lodge, but they survive the water. As they struggle with the ordeal of getting back to the lodge, Lisa believes someone deliberately nudged her into the icy water. Though Mitch initially leans towards her accidentally tripping; he soon believes his Lisa is in peril from an unknown adversary who will try anything to kill her, but neither know why.

Down River is an exhilarating romantic suspense thriller as the audience wonders along with the heroine why this location and who wants her dead. Faster than the raging Wild River and yet filled with vivid descriptions of the Talkeetna Mountains, readers will feel transported to the home of Sarah Palin. Karen Harper provides a powerful who is doing it and why that sub-genre fans appreciate.

Daniel Defoe (1659–1731) was an prolific and versatile writer, pamphleteer and spy, one of the founders of the English novel, who gained fame for his famous novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe based part of the narrative of Robinson on the story of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded on the island of Juan Fernandez. The novel has been variously read as an allegory for the development of civilisation. In 1685, Defoe joined the ill-fated Monmouth Rebellion but gained a pardon by which he escaped the Bloody Assizes of Judge George Jeffreys, however, not all of Defoe's pamphlet writing was political.
