I am coming late to the Alex Rider series as my oldest son is only seven. This is the second Alex Rider book that I've read, for the purpose of understanding when my spy-obsessed son might be old enough to start reading the series.

I enjoyed reading this book. It obviously lacks the complexity and depth of a book written for adults, but it is still a fast paced and enjoyable thriller that borrows heavily on the James Bond and Mission Impossible franchises. Alex Rider makes a likable hero who is brave, tenacious and resourceful.

I would feel comfortable giving it to my son to read when he's a little older - my gut feel is 9-10 years would be about right. He still needs to strengthen his reading skills (words like interrogation, hyperventilating, cloying, claustrophobic and exquisite are typical), but also to develop the maturity to cope with a plot that involves a fair amount of violence (the book opens with the death of Alex's uncle and bad guys get shot on a regular basis).

Here are some things that parents may like to know about this book:
- The storyline is reasonably simple and the bad guy/good guy lines are clearly drawn.
- Violence is not described in overly graphic detail, but it does occur throughout the book. Alex fires a gun twice and hits a bad guy on one occasion. He also causes the death of another villain by causing a plane crash.
- There is no swearing or bad language.
- There is a noticeable absence of positive female characters (unless you count the housekeeper who barely appears). There is a reference by the MI5 (the English equivalent of the FBI) regarding female agents predominantly being of use if you need to slip someone in as a secretary or receptionist.

Well written and absorbing YA novel

YA novel that's well written and absorbing. I was reading this on the bus one day and missed my stop because I was engrossed in the book. I'm an adult who likes to read YA from time to time and found this one a fun read. Good, tight writing, that keeps the plot going in a steady pace. It makes the idea of a 14-year-old MI-6 spy very believable along with the impossible scrapes he gets into. He's a normal teenager but with a good head on his shoulders. It's a nice break from the usual teenage girl assassin/vampire hunter/whiny-romance YA novels out there.My only quibble is I wish Alex's character was a tad more developed. I'm hoping it will get better as I read the other books in the series.

A favorite among kids and adults alike

This is one of those books that everyone loves. All four of my siblings and I agree that it is one of the greatest series out there, and getting us to agree on anything is near impossible. The storyline is easy enough to follow, but may be too graphic for younger readers. It is about a spy, so there is a small amount of violence (nothing too graphic, but probably too much for an advanced 7 year old reader). Also, although the storyline is simple, some of the words are a bit advanced. Kids and adults alike love this book. It is the beginning of one of the best series. If you are planning on reading this, plan on many months and many more books, because you won't ever want it to end.

He spent years living with the Cherokee people in North Carolina, and was able to gain their acceptance and trust, which allowed him to write more firsthand accounts. This made his work more reliable and very accurate.Mooney was a member of the first generation of professional anthropologists; he left behind a wealth of ethnographical and historical data.

We love math-u-see. I love how it comes with everything we need for the student to understand. The dvd instruction frees me up to teach the other kids. I love this curriculum and have been using it for 4 yrs now. It is my favorite by far.
