OSBI Needs to Solve Business Problems

For many years open source software (OSS) was touted as a `free' option for software solutions. Time and experience have revealed many of the "hidden" costs for OSS implementations. The community approach to the OSS code base has been successful for many vendors. However, things change when OSS vendors seek to make money from the software. Most vendors have added non-community "enterprise" versions of the software that are little different from typical on-premises licensed versions.

Lyndsay Wise does an excellent job of dissecting what kind of tech resource commitment it takes to travel the path of OSS for Business Intelligence (OSBI) solutions. Lyndsay rigorously considers why an organization might consider OSBI, with thorough substantiation of her thinking. She draws on her many years of advising organizations of all sizes on the selection of BI solutions to provide a fair and honest survey of the challenges, drawbacks and benefits of OSBI (Chapter 7 is particularly strong in this area).

Lyndsay makes clear what the overall costs are for OSBI and that many times it is not a free option for organizations. In fact OSS may not be a good choice for most small businesses, and frequently may not be suitable for many mid-sized companies -- due to the on-going IT resources that implementations and maintenance can consume. Lyndsay brings to light in great detail the realities of considering OSS for BI needs and how to delineate all of the costs, both hard and soft. The bottomline may well be that OSBI is still preferable to traditional BI solutions - Lyndsay provides the guidance to find out if that is the case.

To help an organization understand if OSS is a good fit, Lyndsay has created excellent tools through items like "readiness checklists" (such as Chapter 18), as well as frequent assessment lists at the end of many chapters. She continuously asks all the right questions. Most of the assessments are focused on technology and the in-house IT team. OSS is tech-intensive - quite frankly there is less value from the business perspective for OSS in and of itself. For the business side of the story, the value comes from solving business problems, ease-of-use, excellent performance, reasonable cost - just as it would for any kind of BI solution.

200 pages of BS

The author is great at talking about all things except actually saying which OS BI tools are out there and how exactly they compare to each other. If you want somebody to tell you on 200 pages that maintaining OS BI system would require internal time and resources, go ahead. The biggest technical advice is that you might need IT person who knows Java. There is no single practical tip about which vendor to select and why.

Not bad as a premise for using open source, but no real info on how to do so

I found this book disappointing. I was hoping to have more than a casual reference to open source products, and that was not the case. The ones mentioned were commercial open source, and were only mentioned in an early chapter. I found more useful information on what open source BI products were out there and how to use them from Wikipoedia.

The same theme seemed to be repeated in each chapter, and it felt like a college student trying to fulfill a page quota by saying the same thing more verbosely, rather than presenting new information.

In the beginning of 2012, IDW announced Transformers would have not one, but TWO ongoing series, and so, fans didn't know quite what to expect, until it was announced that the talent behind both would reflect the works to follow onward. James Roberts, co-writer of Last Stand of the Wreckers and author of the lauded two parter Chaos Theory story now stands head writer alongside some familiar faces, with fellow Wrecker artist Nick Roche helping in, and IDW regular Alex Milne standing as the mainstay artist!

While in Sister series Robots in Disguise, the story is of political intrigue and slow burning thriller, More Than Meets the Eye is a riproaring adventure into space, think Star Trek, but everyone can turn into a car, or a memory stick if you want to stay non-shapist!

The reading is light on pages, but each crammed with more depth and entertainment than any ongoing transformers story in possibly 20 years, and from the blast off, the gathering of a crew and the reveal of a terrifying secret aboard the ship, this issue covers the debut of the team, and shapes up well for IDW's future.

While 'RiD' boasts a familiar line up, 'MTMTE' is full of new and unexplored characters, ripe for introduction and quick to warm to, and best of all?

You don't even have to have read a comic before this to enjoy it.

It certainly HELPS, and to assist, also within is penned by Roberts and Co. the one-shot comic 'The Death of Optimus Prime', detailing the wedge driven into the Autobots that has created such a split.

The Lost Light is lost, and there's a wide, wide galaxy out there between the crew and their goals.

But luckily for us, the adventure is so much more than the destination...

Do Not Miss This!

If you're not reading this series, you're missing out on something truly great. Transformers comics have definitely had ups and down in quality of art and writing. But this is the absolute tip-top on both counts. It's not a reboot, but it is a definite shift in the status quo, and that means you can jump on here without having read anything else, and do OK. We're all figuring this out as we go. These aren't generally well-known characters. And that's all to the good, because we get to watch the story flesh them out in new, surprising ways.

This volume contains the foundational issues, so it's mostly basic adventure stuff here. The storytelling is dense, with LOTS happening in each issue. All the important seeds for later on in the arc are laid down in this book.

This series builds in quality of storytelling as it progresses, so don't stop at Volume 1.

Anton Waters pressed his hot, soft mouth against my hammering pulse.

I melted under him, my body dissolving into shivers. Panting, I put my hands on the table, gripping the table cloth tightly as I struggled to keep myself from touching him back. My fingers itched to feel him. My mouth watered at the thought of tasting him.

"Our marriage would be mutually beneficial,” he said, breath ghosting over my skin. “I think you might even enjoy it."

No, no, no, no, no... "No one would enjoy being forced into sex for money,” I ground out.

He smirked against my throat and swept my hair aside. Lightly, gently, he placed lingering kisses down my throat and up over my neck.

"I would never force you. You will always want it."

My heart twisted in my chest. I know, I know, I wanted to say, but I couldn't bring myself to admit it.

His breath was hot on the back of my neck. "Do you think I won't be able to please you? Is that it?" he whispered, and I felt his words sink into my skin, into my bones, zipping down my body, electrifying me. I wanted him so badly, but how could I tell him that obtaining orgasms with him was the least of my worries?

His leg pressed against mine. The heat of his body seeped through the fabric between us and I wished I'd been more prudent and worn pants instead of a skirt. His fingers alighted on my thigh and began to trace shivering patterns across my skin. Lips and tongue played with the sensitive nape of my neck, and his hand drifted down my arm, fingertips skimming the outside swell of my breast. Between my thighs, I felt myself grow hot and slick.

"I could make you come right here in this restaurant," he murmured, and his voice was hoarse. "Right in front of everyone. I'll make you scream."

His words set me on fire. "I'd like to see you try," I whispered back. Bravado. My voice shook.

But it wasn't a lie.

Pulling back, he graced me with another one of his faint smiles. "You are the perfect woman for me," he said. "Defiant, with nowhere to run. You'd rather die on your feet than live on your knees." His fingers drifted up my leg, up under my skirt. I swallowed around the lump in my throat.

"I'd rather live on my feet than die on my knees, thanks," I told him.

He laughed, then looked shocked that he'd done so. I saw him forcibly recover, but I had no time to bask in my tiny victory. One long, hot finger brushed against the soft mound above my pussy, robbing me of thought.

"You may live on your feet," he whispered, "but I will bend you over and fuck you all the same."

And he slipped under the table.

Christmas romanc trilogy

These three stories make interesting reading but not fascinating reading...it isn't a book you won't want to put down. The stories are different so you won't be bored. I am a fan of Sheryl Woods so I enjoyed that story the most. This book is good for light reading to get you into the mood for the holidays but if you read it in July you'll still enjoy it. And it is a very good way to become familiar with the styles of the three different authors.
