Daniel Defoe (1659–1731) was an prolific and versatile writer, pamphleteer and spy, one of the founders of the English novel, who gained fame for his famous novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe based part of the narrative of Robinson on the story of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded on the island of Juan Fernandez. John Thornton apparently thinks about three things: Marlborough Mills, how to control Margaret, his new wife, and having badly written boring graphic sex as often as possible, even on the FLOOR of the mill. Virtually no plot. Not sure where this was headed or who these people are the author writes of, but they aren't the John and Margaret we all know and love. I gave up halfway through. Needs proofreading. Many mistakes.

A worthy North & South sequel for modern audiences

The author presents us with a well-crafted and engaging story about the central characters from Gaskell's beloved Victorian-era novel. Yes, there are scenes of physical intimacy, but do any of us familiar with John and Margaret doubt they expressed their passion for one another beyond chaste kisses?

People did have sex during the 19th century. If they hadn't, none of us would be here now. There is a difference between pornography and erotic romance, which is what is offered in passages of "The Whistle Echoes."

If you are someone who is squeamish about any material even bordering on graphic, then this probably isn't for you. However, it IS a solid choice as a continuation of Gaskell's "North and South" written for a more modern audience's mindset. I wish the author every success.

Fans of North & South: Avoid this book at all costs

The Whistle Echoes picks up shortly after where Elizabeth Gaskell ends her tale of the romance between John Thornton and Margaret Hale. And at first, I was excited to follow where M. Liza Marte chose to lead the story. As her sequel begins, I was impressed by her ability to capture the voices of the characters from Gaskell's beloved work. This feeling soon faded. Instead of focusing on writing a good story about what kind of a life John and Margaret could have together, Marte turns her novel into a cheap porn. Following the wedding of John and Margaret, dozens upon dozens of sexual escapades are described in mortifying detail. I'm no prude, but I certainly would have advised Marte during the manuscript phase of her novel to move toward quality rather than quantity. The more Marte scribed about the never ending sexcapades of the newly married Thorntons, the more she lost the timbre of their voices and their characters. She forced John and Margaret into anachronistic actions, the likes of which they would have never dared engage. I'm all for showing the physical attraction between two who are so deeply in love, but perhaps "show, don't tell" would have been an helpful guideline for Marte to follow. The book is a bit of a tome, but there really is very little in terms of plot, which is clearly sacrificed in favour of vivid descriptions of the Thorntons' sex life. Honestly, it's not even tantalizing. More than once I winced at the graphic and not at all sexy detailing of their private- and sometimes not so private- interludes. They were just... gross.

The timeline of The Whistle Echoes moves along very much like a train, all shudders and jerks, sudden starts and stops. When Margaret becomes pregnant (on their wedding night no less), Marte decides to spend the lion's share of the novel on Margaret's first trimester, while simultaneously indicating that Margaret is growing large with child. Then Marte skips over almost the whole of the second and third trimesters and quickly has Margaret deliver, at which point the novel comes to a screeching end. I constantly battled confusion over knowing how much time had elapsed as Marte would first indicate one thing and then another entirely, the two things never meshing in terms of flow. And the lack of denouement was jarring and disappointing, to say the least.

The one redeeming quality of this novel is that Marte so quickly surrendered the attempt to accurately capture the characters of John and Margaret, that it was relatively easy to imagine she was writing about two totally different people. In this way, my perceptions of who John and Margaret are remains virtually untainted, and I hope to quickly forget this book in order to ensure this being the case.

My recommendation cannot be a surprise. If you liked Gaskell's original work, or BBC's wonderful rendering of it, leave this piece of heinous pulp fiction well enough alone. You will thank me. You won't know that you are thanking me, but I'll know, and that's good enough for me. If I can save one person from reading this book (and I've already saved two who were waiting on my recommendation to see if they would read it), then that is thanks enough indeed.

The Tale of a Modern Apostle

As someone related to those who have served in the clergy, I found Catherine Marshall's ardent tribute to her late husband, Senate Chaplain Peter Marshall particularly heartwarming and inspiring.
As her husband (who became affectinately known as "Twittering-Birds Marshall" because of the flowery phrasing he gave to his wonderful sermons) painted vivid imagery with the parables he told, she paints a vivid image of his all-too-brief life.
Through her words, we see the winsome Scottish lad who suffers the tragic loss of his father at age four, whose hardscrabble experiences and humble beginnings would lead him to have great compassion for others in similar circumstances, the spiritual depth he developed on the occassions when his Inner Voice saved him from accidental death, the inspiration he received from fellow Scottish churchman Eric Liddell, his Scottish wit, and fun-loving style. He was a man I feel I would have liked, as did many, and had he lived a few more years, he might have been highly instrumental in the struggle for Civil Rights, judging from the deferrence he gave to the writings of African American men of faith, James Weldon Johnson, and George Washington Carver, and his expressed concern for underpriviledged minorities. His sermon, "The American Dream", is still very timely in the modern world.
Readers follow him through his immigration to the United States, his entrance into the clergy, his meeting of Catherine, the difficulty of finding time to spend with her due to mounting ministerial duties, his marriage, his camaraderie with other ministers, the high emotion of embracing U.S. Citizenship, the use of his sharp sense of humor to win people over to Christ, his enthusiasm for board games, sports, life itself, and also his great love for his family and humanity in general.
I can hear the melodic trill of his brogue when his quotes appear in the story as his wife recaptures the rhythm of his speech patterns, and each chapter is headed with appropriate Biblical verses that summarize their contents.
Dr. Marshall was nonimated as Senate Chaplain while serving in the church where Abraham Lincoln once worshipped, and upon his election became a much-loved confidant of Senators on both sides of the aisle. Michigan Senator, Arthur Vandenberg (who himself passed away around the time of this book's publication in 1951), affectionately called him, "Dominie", the Dutch word for "Parson".
We share the couple's delight at the birth of their son, "Wee Peter" in the years prior to Dr. Marshall's rise to the Chaplaincy of the Senate, the challenges to their faith brought on by Catherine's bout with tuberculosis, and Peter's heart trouble, and see how much prayer meant in their lives at such time. We also see how Peter's illness inspired others to pray. But we are also made aware that not everyone admired the Marshalls and that the Good Reverend was subjected to anti-immigrant backlash as well as misinterpretations of the meaning of his sermons. He had his moments of self-doubt, as does everyone.
Dr. Marshall's instinctiveness in changing his sermon for the graduating class of the Annapolis Naval Academy, which he gave just hours before the announcement of the attack on Pearl Harbor is formidable, and through his warm, consoling mannerisms, Christ became warm and alive in the hearts and minds of many. Through Marshall's example, many lives were changed for the better.
We also see how this spiritually attuned couple helped produce some of Peter's best sermons in joint ventures that made their life's pilgrimage a real partnership.
Five days after his attendance of President Truman's second inaguration, this fine representative of Christ on Earth was lost to the world. But his sweetness, and love for his wife were evident until the very end. As he passed from this life, the Holy Spirit gave Catherine the strenghth to carry on with her life, and to console others. As she worked on her late husband's story, he appeared to her in a dream, providing encouragement, but still letting that sparkling Scottish wit shine through, perhaps more eminently, in the afterlife.
The last words he spoke to her, "See you in the morning", would carry her through the years.--Through the acclaim of this biography, the 1955 film of the same name in which Richard Todd gave an adorable performance as Peter, an eventual second marriage, the entrance of her son into the Presbyterian ministry, her own success with the novel, "Christy" and other religious literature, and eventually, her own undoubtably happy reunion with Peter in March, 1983.
Her son honors the rich spiritual legacy of his parents by continuing the family tradition. As did his own father, Peter John Marshall lost his father in childhood, and perhaps strives to know him by following in his footsteps. Perhaps he knows the Senate Chaplain who was his father better than the elder Dr. Marshall knew his father through the availability of the Senate Chaplain's recorded sermons and writings.

As the life of Dr. Marshall continues to inspire many all these years later, I'll say that I do.

I was disappointed in the condition of this book. Ok. I know interpretations of good, very good, etc vary but the condition of this book was extremely shabby. Catherine Marshall's book of her husband Peter is wonderful as are all her books.
