for the resulting onset of hostilities in 1861, Charles B. Dew finds in the commissioners'
brutally candid rhetoric a stark white supremacist ideology that proves the contrary. The
commissioners included in their speeches a constitutional justification for secession, to be
sure, and they pointed to a number of political "outrages" committed by the North in the decades
prior to Lincoln's election. But the core of their argument—the reason the right of secession
had to be invoked and invoked immediately—did not turn on matters of constitutional
interpretation or political principle. Over and over again, the commissioners returned to the
same point: that Lincoln's election signaled an unequivocal commitment on the part of the North
to destroy slavery and that emancipation would plunge the South into a racial
nightmare.

Dew's discovery and study of the highly illuminating public letters
and speeches of these apostles of disunion—often relatively obscure men sent out to convert the
unconverted to the secessionist cause--have led him to suggest that the arguments the
commissioners presented provide us with the best evidence we have of the motives behind the
secession of the lower South in 1860–61.

among historians and the public at large more than a century after the Civil War, Dew challenges
many current perceptions of the causes of the conflict. He offers a compelling and clearly

Highly Recommended for Any Serious Scholar of the Civil War

The debate over the causes of secession is contentious even today. While one side of this debate argues the Confederate states seceded solely over the issue of states' rights, the other contends that the institution of slavery was the primary cause of the conflict. In Apostles of Disunion: Southern Secession Commissioners and the Causes of the Civil War, Charles B. Dew attempts to end this debate by examining pre-Civil War political documents, letters, and speeches made by secession commissioners and Southern politicians. According to Dew, these sources clearly demonstrate that the institution of slavery was at the heart of the conflict.
Dew organizes this book chronologically and provides an extensive appendix, endnotes, and a short index. Dew begins this book by discussing several current events that demonstrate that Americans have not come to a consensus on the causes of the Civil War. For instance, on the Immigration and Naturalization Service's citizenship exam, the question, "`The Civil War was fought over what important issue?,'" can be answered by choosing either "slavery" or "states rights" (4). The debate surrounding the Confederate battle flag also reveals what Dew describes as "the deep division and profound ambivalence in contemporary American culture over the origin of the Civil War" (4). While some see this flag as a symbol of racism and oppression, others view it as a symbol of "Southern heritage" (8). Despite this contemporary debate, in the closing pages of chapter one, Dew argues that the words of the secession commissioner leave no question about the central role that slavery played in the Civil War.
After this brief introduction, Dew examines the course of events that led Southern states to appoint secession commissioners and the role these men played in garnering support for the Confederacy. According to Dew, the first secession commissioners were appointed just a few weeks after the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, won the presidential election on November 6, 1860. In fact, Mississippi appointed secession "commissioners to every slave state" in the Union twenty-four days later, and eventually most of the states in the Deep South would follow suit (23). While the messages these men brought to other Southern states varied, the central argument was the same: secession was the only logical course of action given the Republican Party's hostility towards the institution of slavery. For example, William L. Harris, a secession commissioner from Mississippi, told a joint meeting of the Georgia General Assembly, that the North wanted constitutionally guaranteed "equality between the white and negro races" (29). Harris went on to declare, that Lincoln's election "promised `freedom to the slave, but eternal degradation for you and for us" (29). Dew claims that Harris's speech set the tone for every subsequent speech of the secession commissioners.
In the next three chapters, Dew discusses the speeches made by the secession commissioners to South Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia. While the rhetoric of secession commissioners may have softened the farther North they went, the message was still the same: the North wants to institute racial equality and abolish slavery. Secession commissioner Andrew Pickens Calhoun's speech to the Alabama Convention is a prime example of this type of argument. The foundation of Calhoun's speech was that, "The election of a `Black Republican' to the presidency threatened South Carolina with `degradation and annihilation'" (41). Degradation would come in the form of federally imposed racial equality and annihilation would result from slave insurrection and the resulting racial amalgamation. Fulton Anderson, an appointee from Mississippi, was even more direct in his speech to the Virginia Secession Convention. Anderson argued that a Republican controlled federal government would be hostile to the South and described the Republican Party as having an "unrelenting and eternal hostility to the institution of slavery" (p. 62). Based upon the remarks of the secession commissioners, Dew argues that the preservation of slavery was a primary cause of secession and thus, the Civil War.
Dew concludes this book by examining how Southern politicians, including many secession commissioners, attempted to reframe the conflict in a more noble light after the end of the war. For example, Jabez L. M. Curry, a secession commissioner from Alabama, wrote in 1901 that the Civil War was fought to "save the principles of the Constitution," but he made no mention of the role that slavery played (57, 76). Even Jefferson Davis, former President of the Confederacy, tried to reframe the conflict writing in 1881, "`The sectional hostility' that developed before 1861 `was not the consequence of any difference on the abstract question of slavery'" (17). Instead, Davis claims, "The South...fought for the noblest principles...for `constitutional government,' for `the supremacy of law' and for `the natural rights of man'" (17).
According to Dew, the fact that the debate over the origins of the Civil War continues today, demonstrates the success of this concerted effort to reframe the conflict.
While initially overlooked, historians today view the arguments made by secession commissioners as an important factor in understanding the origins of the Civil War, and Charles B. Dew's Apostles of Disunion is largely responsible for this historiographic shift. Orville Vernon Burton's The Age of Lincoln demonstrates the persuasiveness of Dew's argument. In addition to making clear that the institution of slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War, Burton includes a short discussion of the secession commissioners. Burton even cites Henry L. Benning, a secession commissioner from Georgia, as declaring, "It was a conviction, a deep conviction on the part of Georgia, that a separation from the North was the only thing that could prevent the abolition of her slavery" (Burton 120). Due to the soundness of Dew's argument, and the endorsement of historians like Burton, this reviewer earnestly recommends Apostles of Disunion to anyone interested in understanding the Age of Lincoln or the American Civil War.

A bit disappointing...

I am sadly disappointed by this book. The plates are sporadically placed throughout the book, and some species of birds are not illustrated. For example, what does a Greater Antillean Grackle look like? There is a brief description in the text, but will I be able to differentiate between it and a Great-tailed Grackle?
There are no distribution maps either, so I have to rely on checklists printed from my Thayer's Birder's Diary program to determine which species to expect in, say, the Cayman Islands.
I will be field testing this guide in May 2002 and may have a better feel for the usefulness, or lack thereof, of this book. Meanwhile, studying the birds prior to my trip is a bit cumbersome due to the design of this book. In any event, would recommend a North American supplement for any trip to the region.

A disappointment

When I ordered this guide, I was expecting a format that was similar to the other Petersen bird guides. Unfortunately, this book is nowhere near as well organized. The plates are small, the artwork is not as good, and not all the species are illustrated. The text was also rather thin in life history information. If you are traveling to the Caribbean in winter and aren't up to speed on North American migratory singbirds, you will need to take an Eastern U.S. bird guide with you as well, as the numerous migrants that comprise the wintertime fauna are merely mentioned. I managed to identify most birds that I saw while using this guide, but it was a frustrating process.

Review of "Birds of the West Indies."

Unless one is collecting Peterson Field Guides, I do not recommend this book. Its organization is dated. Color plates are segregated from the bird descriptions. Many of the descriptions are accompanied by a black and white sketch. Some of the birds described lack any sketch or color plate. The book does not contain distribution maps. Redeeming aspects of the book are (1) it is small in size and (2) it includes a comprehensive list of species in the area with a written text for each.

A really sweet, clean read

I thought that I would maybe need a couple of days to think about this. But nope, I really really liked it. It just goes to prove that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover (because that cover is not making me happy at all)!

It's a quick read, too, and you can read it in one sitting for a quick fix. Everything starts happening right away, so it has really good pace.

Both Johnny and Glory are such great characters. She wasn't a sappy, desperate girl. The way she overcame her past and made something out of herself was really admirable. I loved her journey to the woman she became in the end.
And Johnny wasn't a typical hero, either. I loved him.
Her letter to Johnny was filled with so much melancholy, it broke my heart. It had a sense of finality to it, and it really made me sad.

Honestly, the book wasn't majorly a romance. Glory is dealing with her sister's tragedy and family, and I though she did a spectacular job at being there for her. Vic's family won me over. Jake and the kids are wonderful. Their story was beautiful.

The writing is great, too, maybe a bit too simple, but definitely good.
There were characters I would have loved to find out more about (mainly Kate), but I get it that maybe it would have been too much.
The book could have used some more editing, but I wasn't annoyed at all at the little spelling/grammar mistakes I found. There weren't that many.

Overall, I really liked it. Maybe it's a tad too short? But the story develops nicely and everything is rounded up in the end. I definitely recommend it.

The book was very beautiful story. I loved reading it. So real life. The only thing I couldn't understand is how so many grammatical/spelling errors could have been overlooked. Was it proofed before release?

Monte Reel is also the author of The Last of the Tribe. He has written articles and essays for the New York Times Magazine, Harper’s and Outside, and he is a former foreign correspondent for the Washington Post. He lives outside of Chicago with his wife and two daughters.

It rips, it snorts, it informs and entertains

Terrific popular history, this. Like a great many others, I suspect, I had never hear of Paul Du Chaillu prior to picking this up. This could be due to my spotty education, though it is more so (I flatter myself) that Du Chaillu seems virtually unknown today, at least in his adopted US. Mores the pity, but it does point out the hole to be filled by this very entertaining and enjoyable volume about this explorer /adventurer who gave the outside world it first glimpse of the mysterious beast, the gorilla.

Shrouded in myth and mystery, when Du Chaillu set out from the coast of Gabon to search the interior of equitorial Africa in 1856, gorillas had rarely, if ever, been so much as glimpsed by anyone other than local tribes who tended to steer clear of them and fabulate incredible stories to help explain why they did. When Du Chaillu emerged with their bodies and presented them to the outside world he set off a storm of celebrity, controversy and consternation. And this is where the story really takes off.

Well researched and extensively noted, Reel's book is not an academic history or a full-fledged biography, though it is likely as close to the latter as we are likely to get since Du Chaillu's origins are both poorly documented and, for reasons that become clear, he did a wonderful job of keeping them hidden during his lifetime. But it is also more than a jolly-good yarn, too. Reel does a fine job of putting the man, his acts and actions, into historical context, where he and his gorillas stepped out of "darkest" Africa right into the middle of the initial controversies over evolution and "man's relationship to beast".

But it is, too, a jolly-good yarn and an absorbing read. If I might have liked to delve a little deeper here and there, well, that's why there are OTHER books on the era and the histories of science, thought and exploration. This is written for a popular audience and it delivers. Very much recommended.

More Than a Simple Biography

The main theme of this book is the biography of Paul du Chaillu, who is credited as being the first white man to see, kill and capture a gorilla. Were that the end, the story would be a mere twenty pages. There is much more to the story and Mr. Reel captures it.

Du Chaillu was one of the explorers of the Victorian Age who were worshiped in theory, but not in practice. With echoes of today's world, it seemed the scientific community and the public loved to pump these explorers up and then relish in trashing and destroying them. Du Chaillu returned from Gabon having explored areas of Africa never seen by white men before. He brought back skins and skulls of gorillas, samples of hundreds of other birds and animals never before seen as well as stuffed gorillas. Since he was young and inexperienced, he did not have the scientific proof necessary in some people's eyes. Therefore they tore him down accusing him of never traveling inland and fabricating his stories of bravery. A second trip, taken after he learned his scientific lessons, vindicated him and his reputation was resurrected.

The story is bigger than that, however. Our hero's travels occurred at the same time that Darwin's evolution theory was being spread. The gorilla played right into the burgeoning vitriolic debate between evolutionists and creationists (as they are now known). The storm enveloped du Chaillu's finds and the debates often turned personal. Thus, the discovery of the gorilla developed into much bigger questions such as: Was the gorilla man's previous step in evolution? Was the gorilla half a step below blacks?

Mr. Reel's account is very readable. He does well integrating the biography of an interesting yet forgotten historical character into the times and scientific debates of the times.

Social Adventures in Evolutionary Theory

In the last year or so I've been struggling to broaden my literary tastes by dabbling in nonfiction. Authors like Monte Reel make me forget that I am reading historical accounts because the characters are very much alive and real. I wrongly assumed that this book might be a dry dictation singularly about Paul Du Chaillu. Instead, Reel weaves a tapestry, introducing us to historical figures who we would likely never have heard of but were frequently quite renowned in their heyday.

"Between Man and Beast" exceeded my hopes for all that nonfiction can be. I felt more than a passing interest in the topic, I was genuinely engaged. I gained a much greater understanding of the era and the people and was even made to laugh by their antics more than 150 years later. He worked as a psychiatrist for almost 30 years at the Maudsley Hospital, London and was honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College, London).
