A very solid book

The book uses a different approach than many by starting with the concepts of atoms and building up. It doesn't seem as helpful with the hard math components with chemistry mainly because it focuses on making sure the student understands the CONCEPTS of chemistry. I find that if you conceptually understand the material, the math will come naturally because you understand why the math works. I think it's a fine textbook for what it sets out to do: teach first-year college chemistry.

Unclear and abrupt changes

I find that I enjoy chemistry despite working with this book. This book has not been helpful at all. Its unclear, the topics, subjects, and how things are presented is totally confusing. Though I am doing very good in Chemistry II it is not because of this book. I would figure things out and because I read the book get confused all over again. Youtube does a better job at explaining Chemistry then this book does. Unfortunately its the class textbook and I had to buy it.
The changes are often abrupt, I had to go through this book picking out the few sentences that made sense and then string it together. Even after understanding a subject, I still have a hard time understanding it in how this book presents it. Whoever wrote this textbook obviously did it for the money, not for the learning of chemistry. The way the equations and math is done in this book is pretty much useless. I even got the solutions manual for it, not that much more helpful. Sometimes you go from like A-D and it didn't explain what happened in B and C.

Aggravating.

I absolutely love chemistry, but this book is making me very frustrated. Wrong calculations fill this book, and there are also plenty of grammar issues. For difficult problems I have to use outside sources like the Internet for a better understanding of the concepts because this book is useless for help. I just feel like I am getting an overall bad foundation for the many chemistry classes I have left for my major...
