Absolutely Essential

This book will be of enormous benefit to any Catholic musician trying to understand where we are today and how we arrived here. Father Ruff takes us on a journey through music and the liturgy from many perspectives. He discusses music itself and how it functions in a liturgical setting. With meticulous scholarship, he traces the history of liturgical music both from grassoots movements and from the viewpoint of the heirarchy and documents through the years. Then he proceeds to examine the place of music within the reformed liturgy today. Throughout, we are treated to a wonderful blend of thorough research, liturgical insight and pragmatism tempered by a gentle and kind sense of humor. The book itself is a treasure.

If you are a Catholic Church musician, read this book

Ruff's doctoral dissertation on the Treasury of Sacred Music provides research and analysis into the rationale of the major issues emerging in Catholic Church music in the Papacy of Benedict XVI, namely, use of latin, importance and appropriate role of Gregorian Chant in the liturgy, role of choirs, polyphonic ordinaries, polyphonic propers and motets, and silence---to mention a few key elements. Ruff, as an American Benedictine monk, who studied and grasped the Austrian musical culture, brings these issues so fundamental to the Germanic musical culture to an Amererican audience with clarity. The history of the clash between the musicians (conservative musicians, as he calls them), represented by Angles, Overath, and in the United States Schuler reflecting the Consortium International Musicae Sacrae, first with the framers of the Chapter Six of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy on Music and the compromises that they brought about is worth the time to read the over 650 pages of the book. Their ongoing conflicts with the Consillium,(Bugnini) and Univesa Laus (Gelineau, Hucke, Stephani, et all) provide an English version of these controversies long debated in German, French and Italian. The book ends, where the dissertation ended, before the Papacy of Benedict XVI, but the clash between conservative musicians and the liturgy continues. This book provides an accurte platform from which to assess today's issues.
If I have a hesitation, it is the price of the book. Perhaps we will be able to convince Anthony Ruff to publish smaller versions of this book---to make it feasible price wise for a wider audience. It deserves to be read and studied by everyone in the field.

Inclusive & Hopeful

Yes it is more than 600 pages, and financially dear, but it is well worth the time and money! Ruff provides a panoramic view of several centuries of "Liturgical Reform" as it affects music and musicians. I particularly enjoyed the closing seven chapters; three on "problem areas" [active participation, role of the choir, the liturgical composer], and four on "using inherited genres" [chant; polyphonic Mass ordinary; motets; vernacular congregational hymns]. While citing document, paragraph, and verse [so much legislation, not all consistent!], Ruff sees the "treasury" as truly a marvelous artistic heritage, while also encouraging a creative present and future of hopefulness.

The endearing and quirky denizens of the strip included Milo Bloom, Steve Dallas, Michael Binkley, Cutter John, Bill the Cat, and Opus the Penguin.

Bloom County was a strip that dealt with many issues relevant to the period. Occasional "Context comments" are added throughout this collection, giving the reader a greater understanding of the time.

Incredible Content, Image Quality is Still Fuzzy

I'll make this brief. This book gets 3 stars for only one reason: They reproduced the artwork poorly! Again!! If you look at my 4 star review and images of Bloom County: The Complete Library, Vol. 1: 1980-1982 (Library of American Comics) you'll see that they screwed up the scans there too. For that volume there were two levels of image quality, bad & worse. "Fortunately", this entire volume is the better of the two (just bad).

This quality is still significantly worse than the original compilations that came out when the strip was still running.

So, take a good look at the better image on that other review (the one with the black star in the panel), and compare it to the original compilation. Detail is still lost. The panel lines are fuzzy. Artwork is not as sharp.

Take a look on every page on this volume, and you'll see a line above the page number. *That* line is fuzzy! I thought that maybe the printing press was just bad, but the page numbers are sharp as a tack. There is only ONE piece of artwork that is sharp. That is on the page near the back that advertises the upcoming third volume. A picture on the lower right shows Opus reading a Penthouse magazine, with the title "Madonna Nude Yet Again" emblazoned on the cover. Ze Meadow Morals Squad (Hodge-Podge, Portnoy & Milo)looms ominously behind him with a baseball bat. Sharp & clear, just as it should be. ALL the artwork in this volume should look as good! IDW: Whatever you did for this piece of art, do it for all the strips!!

I saw the same problems with IDW's reproductions of Terry & the Pirates. I gave them a pass because the art is so old, and they probably had to scan newsprint for many. But here they have the originals!

So why 3 stars instead of 4 like in Volume 1? I was giving them a chance to correct their errors on the second volume & they blew it. I sincerely hope that they fix these problems with volume 3. Is it the editor who is screwing up, or does Berke just not care about the end result? Does he see these volumes as just a cash cow? A lot of the comments written by him in the book suggest that he cares a lot less for his work than his fans. He thinks it's too dated to have any relevance today.

Berke: You're wrong. Go read some old Doonsebury collections. They are even more topical, and they still hold up. Just like your work. When I was a kid, I didn't get your political references, but I still thought it was funny that a cat would fall in love with a woman by the name of Jeane Kirkpatrick. Come on Berke, this is the definitive set. Have IDW put some extra effort to get it right!

On the plus side, There is a lot of strips that had never before made it into a compilation, a lot more commentary by Berke, and even some sketches at the end. The paper quality & binding is as good as the first volume.

Buy it knowing that if you have the original compilations, you should not get rid of them.

This collection begins right where the last collection leaves off. It has many more strip then the first one and is has much funnier ones. Definitely recommend to any fan!

Handsome hardcover collects classic "Bloom County" comic strips from 9/27/82 to 7/1/84

This hardcover collects Berkeley Breathed's "Bloom County" comic strips that originally ran from September 27, 1982 to July 1, 1984. These were previously collected in trade paperback form in the last quarter of "Loose Tails", all of "Toons For Our Times" and the first half of "Penguin Dreams and Stranger Things". Strips appear in sequence, three dailies to a page, with Sunday strips each spanning one full-color page.
Breathed provides annotations throughout the book, explaining both his thoughts about the strips and pop culture references that young readers might find obscure. Ted Koppel provides the forward. The familiar cast of characters is here: Opus, Milo, Binkley, Steve Dallas, Cutter John, Bobbi Harlow, Oliver Wendell Jones, Hodge Podge, Portnoy, etc. Breathed gently satirizes both the political left and right: for example, on page 68, "Bloom Beacon" editor Milo is approached by respective caricatures of a gun zealot and misguided hippie in successive strips.
I got into "Bloom County" a couple years after these strips appeared, devouring the aforementioned trade paperback collections in junior high school. Rereading these strips two decades later revealed some previously unappreciated jokes, such as the fake "Those Darn Feminists" cartoon drawn by "Buckley n' Safire". Some charmingly dated 1980s references inspire nostalgia, but the majority of this material remains culturally relevant. I enjoyed the Volume 1 collection: this material is even better. Very strong cases can be made for both "Calvin and Hobbes" and "The Far Side", but "Bloom County" remains my favorite comic strip of the 1980s.

Lucinda is called to his Light, she can't help reaching for it, but to do so could have everlasting consequences she may not be prepared to face. As time runs out - first with the Iunctio, then the Ljósálfar - Lucinda must do what she has to do, to survive, before her heartache breaks her in two.

But memories plague her, her mind starts to play cruel tricks and slowly reality begins to crumble, taking a once strong and confident Nosferatin down as quickly as a predator catches its prey. And now, there are just so many predators, Lucinda may not stand a chance at all at avoiding being their prey.

About the Author
Nicola Claire lives in beautiful Taupo, New Zealand with her husband and two young boys. Loved the end!

This book takes places a few months after the last book ended. Lucinda is not in a good place. She's hurting a whole lot. And she's also running. But when she gets found bad things start to happen. Not only is she trying to stay away from Avery, but also the Fae but then something bad happens and she gets taken. She must do everything in her power to get out before it is too late.

This book was okay. It got slightly boring at times. But I totally loved the end! I was so happy that happened. I kind of hated the stuff that happened between Lucinda and the Fae. That really sucked. But I think she did okay considering everything that had happened. I'm not very anxious to read the next book!

Fey Princess? Michel dead? New suitor? Power struggles!

Once again trust becomes a major issue with the supernatural of Auckland and beyond. Michel is in a funk after being betrayed by his kin, Erica. He withdraws from Luce and his entire line. It takes quite a bit to bring him more into the light.

Meanwhile a master vampire and a fey prince are both after Luce and this is getting old for Michel. No matter how much Luce tries to convince him, he is insecure that she might not be "his."

New characters are introduced, a trip to London later and Luce adds two new members to her own vampire line (stealing two from a very old Russian vampire). Michel finds out that his maker is still alive and in cahoots with the fey trying to re-enter this dimension. At the final battle with Amicus, it appears Michel is killed, the fey prince has severed the bond so Luce is left alive. So much pressure for Luce to bond again.

OMG! What next? A good read.

Entertaining as always

Nicola easily captured my attention in this book. Even though I accidentally read some spoilers I was still able to get lost in the story. The challenges Lucinda has to face increase to an unbearable level in this book. That seems almost impossible since she already has a ton of crap on her plate from the previous 5 books. I'm sure I had my lip poked out on several occasions while reading.

My only complaint is the detailed surveillance of what each vampire is wearing. I skip those parts because they are too long and unnecessary. The descriptions are usually right before the plot thickens, so it does provide some foreshadowing. Or a waste of valuable reading time. This depends on the reader and how much time they have.

Go ahead and buy all 8. I wish I did that since I obviously must finish the whole series then search for all Nicola books and start on those as well. Happy Reading:)

Cute book for toddlers and younger.

Cute, short, and our 18 mo daughter likes it. As the reader, I was a little disappointed that this isn't near the quality of Llama Llama Red Pajama (which I love to read to my daughter), but regardless it's a cute simple rhyme. It is definitely too simple for kids much older than mine - no story line.

THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. He then goes on to explain to us the Four Elements of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, and Tone Color. We find out about all the musical instruments, their history and classifications. We find out about all the genres in music - Sectional Form, Variation Form, Fugal Form, Sonata Form, Free Form. Did you know that Sonata Form includes symphonies as well? And that symphonies grew out of operatic overtures?
This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

A good introduction to classical music

Given the complexity of classical music, it is not surprising that many people find it confusing and intimidating. With all those terms like "sonata-allegro form" and "contrapuntal texture", it's easy to feel intimidated when trying to make sense of an hour long symphony. Fortunately, Aaron Copland does a good job explaining the basics of how music is structured.

This book covers music, specifically classical music, from several different angles. These include the sensual, expressive, and musical aspects, but also the way elements like rhythm, harmony, and melody interact to form music. Copland also covers musical texture from simple unaccompanied melodies to the complexities of counterpoint.

Copland also gives a basic overview of the history of classical music and how it evolved from unaccompanied religious chants to organum to counterpoint and accompanied melodies. He also mentions how composers do their work and his perspectives and experiences with composition.

On the negative side, the book is very dated, to say the least, refering to 30s era records and "the rhythm-based music of savage tribesmen". However, that shouldn't stop
