Anthony Ruff, OSB, is a member of the Music Subcommittee of the Bishop's Committee on Liturgy and has numerous articles published in Antiphon, The Hymn, and Pastoral Music, among others. Father Ruff is currently an assistant professor of theology and liturgical music at St. John's University.

Absolutely Essential

This book will be of enormous benefit to any Catholic musician trying to understand where we are today and how we arrived here. Father Ruff takes us on a journey through music and the liturgy from many perspectives. He discusses music itself and how it functions in a liturgical setting. With meticulous scholarship, he traces the history of liturgical music both from grassoots movements and from the viewpoint of the heirarchy and documents through the years. Then he proceeds to examine the place of music within the reformed liturgy today. Throughout, we are treated to a wonderful blend of thorough research, liturgical insight and pragmatism tempered by a gentle and kind sense of humor. The book itself is a treasure.

If you are a Catholic Church musician, read this book

Ruff's doctoral dissertation on the Treasury of Sacred Music provides research and analysis into the rationale of the major issues emerging in Catholic Church music in the Papacy of Benedict XVI, namely, use of latin, importance and appropriate role of Gregorian Chant in the liturgy, role of choirs, polyphonic ordinaries, polyphonic propers and motets, and silence---to mention a few key elements. Ruff, as an American Benedictine monk, who studied and grasped the Austrian musical culture, brings these issues so fundamental to the Germanic musical culture to an Amererican audience with clarity. The history of the clash between the musicians (conservative musicians, as he calls them), represented by Angles, Overath, and in the United States Schuler reflecting the Consortium International Musicae Sacrae, first with the framers of the Chapter Six of the Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy on Music and the compromises that they brought about is worth the time to read the over 650 pages of the book. Their ongoing conflicts with the Consillium,(Bugnini) and Univesa Laus (Gelineau, Hucke, Stephani, et all) provide an English version of these controversies long debated in German, French and Italian. The book ends, where the dissertation ended, before the Papacy of Benedict XVI, but the clash between conservative musicians and the liturgy continues. This book provides an accurte platform from which to assess today's issues.
If I have a hesitation, it is the price of the book. Perhaps we will be able to convince Anthony Ruff to publish smaller versions of this book---to make it feasible price wise for a wider audience. It deserves to be read and studied by everyone in the field.

Inclusive & Hopeful

Yes it is more than 600 pages, and financially dear, but it is well worth the time and money! Ruff provides a panoramic view of several centuries of "Liturgical Reform" as it affects music and musicians. I particularly enjoyed the closing seven chapters; three on "problem areas" [active participation, role of the choir, the liturgical composer], and four on "using inherited genres" [chant; polyphonic Mass ordinary; motets; vernacular congregational hymns]. While citing document, paragraph, and verse [so much legislation, not all consistent!], Ruff sees the "treasury" as truly a marvelous artistic heritage, while also encouraging a creative present and future of hopefulness.
