The Indomitable Spirit of Edmonia Lewis. A Narrative Biography., by Harry Henderson, Albert Henderson

Winner of the eLit GOLD award: "Illuminating Digital Publishing Excellence."

Edmonia Lewis was the first famous “colored sculptor” and the first to idealize her African and American Indian heritages in stone. She flourished from 1864 through 1878, and, as an artist, was a rare instrument for social change in the aftermath of the Civil War. She pressed her case for equality from her studio in Rome, Italy, and with annual tours of the United States.

Our new narrative of Lewis’s life and art updates many “established facts” - well beyond erroneous birth and death dates - with more than 100,000 words, 50 illustrations, 800 references, bibliography, index, and a reference list of more than 100 works with notes on museum holdings. It is based on private letters, public documents, essays, hundreds of news items, reviews of her work, museum collections, and more than two dozen published interviews. It reveals how a world biased against her color, class, gender and religion received her. Of special interest to African-American and American-Indian studies, as well as art, women’s, and American history, the narrative opens an abundance of previously unrecognized sources, reinterprets important relationships, names missing works, and corrects the identification of an important portrait. Students of the nineteenth century will find it a cool counterpoint to the bitter rage of Civil War and Reconstruction.

Readers familiar with her legendary icons of race may be surprised by her many portraits and her untold moves to Paris and London. They will also find answers to long-standing questions: Where, when, and how did she die? Why did her encounter with a bronze Ben Franklin leave her reeling? Why did she idealize a woman with African features only once in her career? Why did she never cite the now-famous Forever Free after her first interviews in Rome? Why did she have to stalk Henry Wadsworth Longfellow through the streets to make his portrait? Where was her studio? How often did she tour America? How did she enter her work in the 1876 Centennial expo, which had barred colored people absolutely? What were her relationships with fans, mentors, and fellow sculptors? Who were her rivals, her best friends, and her worst enemies? Fresh evidence, never before collected and collated, argues a novel motive for her erotic masterwork, the Death of Cleopatra, which sits apart in her œuvre like a hussy in a small town church. Newly realized sources also change our view of her childhood and provide ample support to refute distortions of her personal character, sexuality, and appearance.

Harry Henderson was co-author with Romare Bearden of the “landmark” History of African-American Artists from 1792 (Pantheon, 1993) and 6 Black Masters of American Art (Doubleday, 1972). Albert Henderson has contributed to a number of learned journals and books.

Very well researched and written
By Neil
I enjoy reading about people's lives, people that have achieved something, so that is I was quite intrigued when I coincidentally found this book a few weeks after discovering who Edmonia Lewis was, an American sculptor from African origins whose life began in the middle of the 19th century. Her interest in sculpture came to the fore when studying under Edward Augustus Brackett, a renowned sculptor from that period, with Civil War and African/American heritage at the fore.

The influences and inspiration from her early works were quite revealing and perhaps not too surprising of that era and it soon came to pass that a considerable reputation was in the making and the eventual worldwide notoriety followed.

If you are not of an academic or scholarly mind, you might find this of little interest or value and that is fair enough as it is not intended to be "light reading". With many modern biographies there is usually a mixture of the life with humor attached somewhere but this has a far more serious tone throughout. However, if you are of an academic or scholarly mind, or even just have a general or passing interest in history, then this should be on your list of books to read.

On a final note, the one thing that stood out above everything else was the depth of research that must have been required to complete this work. It is easy enough to track down Edmonia Lewis on Google but that barely scratches the surface. The amount of research is something I have a great deal of admiration for and I am guessing finding a lot of this information was probably not easy so full marks must go to Harry and Albert Henderson.

Scholarly Work Clears Up Mystery of Edmonia Lewis
By Marc Stern
As a trained historian, I approached this work with a bit of trepidation, knowing too well, that one historian's opinion is another's question. However, in the "The Indomitable Spirit of Edmonia Lewis by Harry Henderson and Albert Henderson," two very good scholars have taken many of the myths and stories about this African-American sculptress of the mid-19th century and have not only corrected them, but have also brought us first-hand sources and interviews, at the time, which show the multi-faceted person Edmonia Lewis was. Lewis sculptures were the first that helped to show not only her African-American heritage, but also her Native American heritage and did a great deal to help shape today's beliefs in those heritages. It has taken that long for her work to be recognized as the seminal work that it was. That Harry and Albert Henderson had to spend years just tracing primary and secondary sources so that the biography was correct shows the care with this they undertook this excellent piece of biography.

No, this isn't the world's most scintillating piece of writing. It tends toward the scholarly, which it rightly should, however, as the Hendersons have found new sources which refute some of the mischaracterizations of Lewis in her youth. Their work has also straightened out some of questions of Lewis' life about her passing. They also examine her body of work and her celebration of the African-American woman. Her contributions to the discussion of race in America are now finally clear thanks to the careful work the Hendersons have completed.

Well written, well researched, a look at an artist's life
By rocket7001
This is the biography of a woman named Edmonia Lewis, a woman of mixed African and Indian heritage. Edmonia Lewis was a sculptor who was successful in a time when women and minorities were heavily discriminated against. Edmonia Lewis lived in the mid-nineteenth century. During this time, it was incredibly hard for women to be recognized for their achievements. Female artists, in particular, were thought to only be capable of copying other works.

Edmonia Lewis challenged this theory and rose against seemingly insurmountable odds in order to do so. She rose above her background as an orphan only to be unfairly kicked out of college as a young woman. Edmonia mostly taught herself the art of sculpting, and was determined to leave her mark despite the society she lived in. She refused to give up her craft for the sake of the elite and their expectations. The Indomitable Spirit tells of how Edmonia made her own path to bring about social change through art.

This book is extremely well researched. In addition to telling an incredible story, the author also corrects many myths about the subject. The Indomitable Spirit uses many primary and secondary resources and not only tells the story of a sculptor, but also brings to light what a genuinely interesting and multifaceted person Edmonia Lewis was. The author paints a vivid picture, and while reading this book you will not only get a sense of Edmonia's achievements, but you will also walk away feeling like you got to know her as a person.

Although this is a "niche" book, it is also very interesting on it's own. I had not heard of Edmonia Lewis before I read this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. The book is very academic and not at all light reading material, but if you have the time, I would really recommend it. No matter your level of familiarity with the subject, you will find something of interest, and you will definitely not regret learning about this amazing woman.

After narrowly surviving a vicious knife attack, gangland detective Eoin Miller thinks he’s earned a break from hunting down thieves, runaways, and stolen drug money. But when crime boss Veronica Gaines tips him off to a particularly sensitive new case, his Romani blood won’t let him say no. A rapist is targeting immigrant girls, and the half-gypsy Eoin knows all too well just how little help an outsider can expect from the local police. Besides, his client isn’t looking for someone to arrest the bastard. He’s looking for someone to stop him—for good.

But the deeper Eoin digs, the more tangled he becomes in a web of corruption, racism, and revenge…especially once his troubled past threatens to derail the investigation by raising questions about his own loyalty and family ties. With his life teetering on the brink of disaster, Eoin realizes there is a fine line between justice and punishment. Now it’s up to him to decide just which side he’s on.

About the Author

Jay Stringer was born in Walsall, in the West Midlands of England. He would like everyone to know he’s not dead yet. He is dyslexic, hence he approaches the written word like a grudge match. His work is a mixture of urban crime, mystery, and social fiction, for which he coined the term “social pulp.” In another life he may have been a journalist, but he enjoys fiction too much to go back. He is the author of Old Gold, the first novel in the Eoin Miller crime series, and Faithless Street. He lives in Scotland.

Run, Don't Walk, to Get a Copy
By TJ Mccarthy
Gypsy ex-cop Eoin Miller returns after his debut in "Old Gold". Never simple, his life becomes more complicated when his new mob boss wants him to solve a series of rapes against illegal immigrants, and his old mob boss wants him to set up his new boss for a hit. At the same time, his mother endures a savage beating - courtesy of the old boss, the new boss, or someone else? - which brings his long estranged brother and sister back into his life.

Eoin is absolutely not your average crime/thriller type of detective. He's a dark fellow inhabiting dark spaces in the world. Think Harry Bosch, then go several degrees darker. It's a bit less noir than the first novel, but maybe that's because I'm getting used to Eoin and his "friends". The pacing is still tight, the characters fleshed-out, and everything is quite believable. What really grabs you here is the fact that nothing is predictable. Eoin is off the sauce, but he is still pretty much a wild card, which adds to the tension and suspense.

I gave "Old Gold" 4-stars, but have to bump this up to 5. We're learning more of Eoin's back-story, and it seems that a confrontation with his father can't be far off. I'm hooked: as long as this series continues, I'll be buying Stringer's books!

Fantastic feel of place and on-target characters
By Steve Weddle
I blog with Jay Stringer and also have the same agent.

I have never met Jay Stringer in person.

I do not owe him any favors, nor does he owe me any.

All that said, I am still able to tell a good book when I see it. And I've seen it.

Jay Stringer's take on the Midlands region of the UK is fantastic and his treatment of characters -- those who have professional or familial relationships with the protagonist -- could be used as textbook chapters on how to write. This one is one of the rare books I've run across in the past few years that carries as much weight for writers as it does for readers -- and that's saying something. Because RUNAWAY TOWN is a remarkable story about characters you'll carry with you forever. This Eoin Miller series is one of those that ups the stakes with each outing. Each book seems both larger and more personal than the last. Just amazing, honestly.

tl;dr version -> Fantastic feel of place and on-target characters wrapped up in a fast-paced adventure with depth.

"...I broke the silence..."
By ~Kiwi~
In this second installment of the Eoin Miller series, Eoin is still being confronted with his own demons along with attracting violence to himself. It seems to be a theme he can't escape. He delves into the world of *family,* both his biological and his somehow invented family. As the story moves on, we hear more about his childhood, about the fires and the reenactment of those fires to help dissolve the old and raise him up from the ashes of hell. He's still reaching for himself and working out the kinks. He knows he needs love, even though that seems unlikely. Perhaps the next book will break that need wide open.

"I need to live in a world where the tree makes a sound when it falls in the rain forest, even if there's nobody there to hear it. I need people to matter, things to matter, because then maybe I will matter."

The journey of self discovery has its ups and downs and its in-betweens. Sometimes we go from one extreme to the other in search of balance. Sometimes that balance never comes, but we hold on to hope and reach out for someone to extend a hand.

CAPTIVATING!!! EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
By Historical Maiden
Snow White's Knight and Magic Mirror was a great read. I read this book right after I finished First Bite. I have to say that the author does a great deal of research for the stories in this book. Did you ever wonder where the queen's magic mirror came from? Well, you will find out in this book~it was so amazing to read!! I could not put it down~I was up until 3am trying to finish it!! I just loved First Bite~ and have just finished SPELL by the same author. SPELL was the most captivating and I could not put it down. The author has and excellent way of telling each story. I love ancient historical novels~and until now, I have always read mosty ancient history. But I could not pass up the 99 cents for these books. These books should be turned into a movie. In Snow White and the Huntsman~I only enjoyed Queen Raveena's part~the rest was a little boring to me. FIRST BITE, SNOW WHITE'S KNIGHT AND MAGIC MIRROR AND SPELL are 100 times better than Snow White and the Huntsman.

A hilarious satire
By R. Stiltzchen
Bulgakow finished this great satire of Soviet life (especially literary life) that was finished in 1940. Somehow 90% of it slipped through the censors at one point, and all of it wound up in Samizdat. A modern reader will miss many of the allusions, but the Wikipedia article about the book is the only companion you need to get nearly full appreciation of this great work.

Even without the allusions, the book is wildly funny, and the book manages to be both a great, fun, holiday read and a literary masterpiece.

It has to be a very challenging task to write such a book with Satan and Pontius Pilate as two of the major characters. Needless to say, this entailed lots of magic, including a huge, sarcastic, talking black cat as part of Satan's retinue.

Hilarious and special
By Sonja Meyer
Very different from anything else I have read, yet very compelling. I especially liked the use of language, it is very light and satirical writing. The storyline is basically the Devil coming to Moscow and causing havoc, I suppose it is meant as a social satire though to be honest I couldn't read that much into (or out of) it, but then it's also excellent entertainment.

A history of the Jews in England, by Albert Montefiore Hyamson

"THE Jewish population of the British Isles has never formed any but a numerically insignificant proportion of the Diaspora. Yet, despite this relative insignificance of Anglo-Jewry, the story of the Jews in this country is of supreme importance to the student of the philosophy of Jewry and of Jewish history. The adage that history repeats itself is well worn, but none the less true. The history of the Jews in England is the history in miniature of the Diaspora. Since the opening of the Christian era the story of the Jews has everywhere been the same—continual alternations of prosperity and persecution. With nations as with individuals the wheel of fortune ever revolves, but with the Jews its progress seems to have been more rapid, for the alternations have been more numerous than with any other race. But with the Jews the wheel lingers during the period of depression and hurries through that of elation in order to recover the time that has been lost. The story told in the following pages shows all the vicissitudes common these two thousand years to the lot of Jewry. The times of prosperity in England have been among the happiest in the annals of the race. At other seasons Anglo-Jewry has reached the lowest depths of despair, when but a step seemed to separate the community from annihilation. Yet that step here as elsewhere has never been taken. The history of the Jews throughout the Diaspora seems to point the moral that the mission of Israel is to suffer—and to persist."

Zhou Enlai: The Last Perfect Revolutionary, by Gao Wenqian

When Gao Wenqian first published this groundbreaking, provocative biography in Hong Kong, it was immediately banned in the People’s Republic. Using classified documents spirited out of the China, he offers an objective human portrait of the real Zhou Enlai, the premier of the People’s Republic of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. Often touted as “the last perfect revolutionary,” Zhou is “a modern saint” who offered protection to his people during the Cultural Revolution, and an icon who allows modern Chinese to find an admirable figure in what was a traumatic and bloody era. But his greatest gift was to survive, at almost any price, thanks to his acute understanding of where political power resided at any one time.

Amazing ability to survive
By Barry W. Ickes
Very interesting read. Hard to believe Zhou could put up with all he did. Amazing ability to survive. I would have liked a bit more on the early period of the Revolution before the Great Leap. But the book was very insightful.

True Hero of the Proletarian Revolution
By Grey Wolffe
Zhou joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the 1920s and served as the head of the armed forces until victory over the Nationalists in 1949 and then as Premier until his death in 1976. He was involved in almost every major battle (and the Long March) fought against both the Japanese and the Nationalists, and survived the purge of the pro-Soviet wing in the 1950s, the Great Leap Forward and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.

His survival was based on (at least publicly) unwavering loyalty to Mao Zedong during the purges and upheavals of Mao's permanent revolution. He was always the mediator and conciliator who knew that in some ways he was invaluable to Mao and therefore was always the 'next' to be purged but Mao always had some one in front of Zhou.

Having been Zhou's official biographer for the CCP, Gao had access to the secret archives of the Party and was able to read the 'revised' histories that were contained there. The archives, and access to Zhou's journals and his widow, allows Gao to understand how Zhou and Mao spent years in a dance of political power versus economic growth. Zhou was always ready to submit himself to self-criticism and humiliation as long as he could keep his position. Mao never fully trusted Zhou's loyalty but he needed him to run the government while Mao determined the direction of the Revolution politically.

The second half of the book is truly intriguing as Gao demonstrated how total power ended up corrupting Mao. Having seen what happened to Stalin after his death, Mao was determined that there would be no Chinese 'Krushchev' to denounce him after his death. Each time that Mao chose a successor, he became paranoid that there was a conspiracy to overthrow him and therefore determined to eliminate that successor. Zhou was able to survive by never being named to succeed Mao. An absolutely fascinating book.

CCP Trench Warfare
By Loves the View
It appears that once the revolutionaries took hold of China, they had no idea what to do with it. In the absense of any program for bettering the country, Mao chose a legacy of power and adulation over one of public works. The result was a wholey dysfuctional bureaucray where participants schemed not for corner offices, but for their lives. This book documents those internal battles.

Unless you have some background in this, not all the dynamics will be accessible. What is clear to the general reader is that at the core was the insatiable ego of the revolution's presumed hero.

The Author's Note tells about the brave people who helped to assemble this book, bringing notes from China index card by index card. The list of sources shows the impressive primary materials that were used. You also learn of the author's mother, herself a victim of the Cultural Revolution, who despite being harrassed, encouraged him to write this book.

The title is misleading. This is not a bio of Zhou, there are pages and pages where he is hardly mentioned. The subtitle is strange since the author says he is trying to show Zhou as not the perfect man he is thought in some quarters to be. While not the main subject, Zhou is an organizing personality for this story, since he is, perhaps, the only enabler of Mao who could have done him in.

The big mid-twentieth century revolutions, China, Russia and Cuba ended in similar ways. The revolutionaries who put their lives on the line to remove autocracies easily surrendered those same dictatorial reins to their victorious generals. The generals had psychopathic needs for power and could not tolerate anything but a cadre of enablers. Fresh from fighting horiffic revolutions they were inured to bloodshed and suffering and saw them as legitimate political tools. Perhaps these are the mindsets it takes to wage a revolution against a despot, but as history shows, they are disasterous in running a country.

A historial romance that is a keeper
By A Customer
In 1811, Massachusetts shipping magnate Alexandra Ward comes to England accompanied by her mother and aunt to close out an agreement with the Burchings Tea Company. However, the English aristocratic owner of the tea company, Lord Sebastian Thorpe, never attends a negotiation session. Instead, his business agent Lyman Jones works out the contract with Alexandra. After completing the deal, Alexandra blackmails Lyman into introducing her to Sebastian. In fact, Alexandra wants to see Sebastian's famous India art collection.

Intrigued by the bold American, Sebastian invites Alexandra to attend a ball with him. At the soiree, Countess Exmoor faints when she sees Alexandra, who looks almost like the elderly woman's deceased daughter-in-law Simone. The next day Alexandra meets the countess who explains that Simone, her spouse (Exmoor's son), and their three children died during the French terror of 1789. A portrait of Simone shows how similar Alexandra looks to the ill-fated woman. Other coincidences surface. As Alexandra wonders about her past, an unknown assailant who probably knows the truth, tries to kill her. She feels her life is safe only with Lord Thorpe, but her heart is another matter altogether.

A STOLEN HEART is a magnificent Regency novel that demonstrates why Candace Camp is one of the top romance writers of the past few years. The story line is filled with excitement as the dire events of 1789 begin to focus to Alexandra and Sebastian. The lead couple is an exhilarating pair with American self-assuredness meeting English aristocratic superiority. Readers will take pleasure in this sizzling tale and earnestly await publication of the next two stories starring Alexander's siblings.

Only an average read
By a-wish-upon-a-star
I loved "So Wild a Heart", and on the strength of that book, I bought some other books by Candace Camp. So far, I have not found another book that is as interesting. Certainly it was not this one, even thought I am not unglad that I read it, as it starts off a series, but this book on its own did not pull me in. It was certainly a pleasant read, and even though some other reviewers complained about the extra-ordinary amount of kidnappings I did not find that a terribly impossible scenario - I think it was just the way it was dealt with that made it come across as a little unlikely.

In this book, we have Alexandra, one of Candace Camp's independent and self-possessed heroines, meet Lord Sebastian Thorpe. Alexandra's family owns a shipping company, and she uses business as an excuse to visit Lord Sebastian - as she really wants to see his Indian collection. As is on par for Ms. Camp's heroines, she refuses to be cowed by the haughty and ufriendly Lord Sebastian, and Sebastian responds well to her methods, so that at the end, we have a match.

Maybe it was just me, but I just could never quite warm up to Alexandra, or Sebastian. I never quite found that "spark" in either of them that would make me want to read more about them, nor did I find their characters to get developed in any meaningful way. As a result, I think that for me this book pretty much rested on the plot, which was okay, but not enough to keep me riveted to the page.

I really like Candace Camp's writing style, and there was nothing particularly jarring about this story, but in the end there was nothing to really recommend this book either. A pleasant, but average read, only three stars.

A Good Read Except..
By K. Morgan
As a fan of Candace Camp and because I had read the second book in this series I bought A Stolen Heart and was very anxious to read it. I found it to be a good book even though it started out slow. I enjoyed the characters, especially Alexandra and Lord Sebastian Thorpe. My only complaint with this book is all the situations Alexandra found herself in. I mean first she's kidnapped and taken to a brothel and then at a ballon show someone tries to abduct her and while Lord Thorpe is trying to rescue her they somehow end up in the ballon and are floating away to destinations unknown. And then to top it off are picked up by a highwayman. How many situations like this can one find themselves in? Except for this I thought the book was really fantastic and couldn't put it down until I read the last word. Definitely a keeper!
