The Indomitable Spirit of Edmonia Lewis. A Narrative Biography., by Harry Henderson, Albert Henderson

Winner of the eLit GOLD award: "Illuminating Digital Publishing Excellence."

Edmonia Lewis was the first famous “colored sculptor” and the first to idealize her African and American Indian heritages in stone. She flourished from 1864 through 1878, and, as an artist, was a rare instrument for social change in the aftermath of the Civil War. She pressed her case for equality from her studio in Rome, Italy, and with annual tours of the United States.

Our new narrative of Lewis’s life and art updates many “established facts” - well beyond erroneous birth and death dates - with more than 100,000 words, 50 illustrations, 800 references, bibliography, index, and a reference list of more than 100 works with notes on museum holdings. It is based on private letters, public documents, essays, hundreds of news items, reviews of her work, museum collections, and more than two dozen published interviews. It reveals how a world biased against her color, class, gender and religion received her. Of special interest to African-American and American-Indian studies, as well as art, women’s, and American history, the narrative opens an abundance of previously unrecognized sources, reinterprets important relationships, names missing works, and corrects the identification of an important portrait. Students of the nineteenth century will find it a cool counterpoint to the bitter rage of Civil War and Reconstruction.

Readers familiar with her legendary icons of race may be surprised by her many portraits and her untold moves to Paris and London. They will also find answers to long-standing questions: Where, when, and how did she die? Why did her encounter with a bronze Ben Franklin leave her reeling? Why did she idealize a woman with African features only once in her career? Why did she never cite the now-famous Forever Free after her first interviews in Rome? Why did she have to stalk Henry Wadsworth Longfellow through the streets to make his portrait? Where was her studio? How often did she tour America? How did she enter her work in the 1876 Centennial expo, which had barred colored people absolutely? What were her relationships with fans, mentors, and fellow sculptors? Who were her rivals, her best friends, and her worst enemies? Fresh evidence, never before collected and collated, argues a novel motive for her erotic masterwork, the Death of Cleopatra, which sits apart in her œuvre like a hussy in a small town church. Newly realized sources also change our view of her childhood and provide ample support to refute distortions of her personal character, sexuality, and appearance.

Harry Henderson was co-author with Romare Bearden of the “landmark” History of African-American Artists from 1792 (Pantheon, 1993) and 6 Black Masters of American Art (Doubleday, 1972). Albert Henderson has contributed to a number of learned journals and books.

Very well researched and written
By Neil
I enjoy reading about people's lives, people that have achieved something, so that is I was quite intrigued when I coincidentally found this book a few weeks after discovering who Edmonia Lewis was, an American sculptor from African origins whose life began in the middle of the 19th century. Her interest in sculpture came to the fore when studying under Edward Augustus Brackett, a renowned sculptor from that period, with Civil War and African/American heritage at the fore.

The influences and inspiration from her early works were quite revealing and perhaps not too surprising of that era and it soon came to pass that a considerable reputation was in the making and the eventual worldwide notoriety followed.

If you are not of an academic or scholarly mind, you might find this of little interest or value and that is fair enough as it is not intended to be "light reading". With many modern biographies there is usually a mixture of the life with humor attached somewhere but this has a far more serious tone throughout. However, if you are of an academic or scholarly mind, or even just have a general or passing interest in history, then this should be on your list of books to read.

On a final note, the one thing that stood out above everything else was the depth of research that must have been required to complete this work. It is easy enough to track down Edmonia Lewis on Google but that barely scratches the surface. The amount of research is something I have a great deal of admiration for and I am guessing finding a lot of this information was probably not easy so full marks must go to Harry and Albert Henderson.

Scholarly Work Clears Up Mystery of Edmonia Lewis
By Marc Stern
As a trained historian, I approached this work with a bit of trepidation, knowing too well, that one historian's opinion is another's question. However, in the "The Indomitable Spirit of Edmonia Lewis by Harry Henderson and Albert Henderson," two very good scholars have taken many of the myths and stories about this African-American sculptress of the mid-19th century and have not only corrected them, but have also brought us first-hand sources and interviews, at the time, which show the multi-faceted person Edmonia Lewis was. Lewis sculptures were the first that helped to show not only her African-American heritage, but also her Native American heritage and did a great deal to help shape today's beliefs in those heritages. It has taken that long for her work to be recognized as the seminal work that it was. That Harry and Albert Henderson had to spend years just tracing primary and secondary sources so that the biography was correct shows the care with this they undertook this excellent piece of biography.

No, this isn't the world's most scintillating piece of writing. It tends toward the scholarly, which it rightly should, however, as the Hendersons have found new sources which refute some of the mischaracterizations of Lewis in her youth. Their work has also straightened out some of questions of Lewis' life about her passing. They also examine her body of work and her celebration of the African-American woman. Her contributions to the discussion of race in America are now finally clear thanks to the careful work the Hendersons have completed.

Well written, well researched, a look at an artist's life
By rocket7001
This is the biography of a woman named Edmonia Lewis, a woman of mixed African and Indian heritage. Edmonia Lewis was a sculptor who was successful in a time when women and minorities were heavily discriminated against. Edmonia Lewis lived in the mid-nineteenth century. During this time, it was incredibly hard for women to be recognized for their achievements. Female artists, in particular, were thought to only be capable of copying other works.

Edmonia Lewis challenged this theory and rose against seemingly insurmountable odds in order to do so. She rose above her background as an orphan only to be unfairly kicked out of college as a young woman. Edmonia mostly taught herself the art of sculpting, and was determined to leave her mark despite the society she lived in. She refused to give up her craft for the sake of the elite and their expectations. The Indomitable Spirit tells of how Edmonia made her own path to bring about social change through art.

This book is extremely well researched. In addition to telling an incredible story, the author also corrects many myths about the subject. The Indomitable Spirit uses many primary and secondary resources and not only tells the story of a sculptor, but also brings to light what a genuinely interesting and multifaceted person Edmonia Lewis was. The author paints a vivid picture, and while reading this book you will not only get a sense of Edmonia's achievements, but you will also walk away feeling like you got to know her as a person.

Although this is a "niche" book, it is also very interesting on it's own. I had not heard of Edmonia Lewis before I read this book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless. The book is very academic and not at all light reading material, but if you have the time, I would really recommend it. No matter your level of familiarity with the subject, you will find something of interest, and you will definitely not regret learning about this amazing woman.
