five stars and then some

No Other Love is an absolutely wonderful book. Nicola and "The Gentleman" ignite sparks from their first encounter and fan the flame throughout the rest of the book.
Nicola, who is a down-down-to-earth member of high society, is still in love with her former lover who has been dead for ten years. One can almost feel her pain and longing for him.
Jack, "The Gentleman" highwayman, is a character I think every woman would love to meet. He is vowing revenge against Exmoor for a past wrong. Jack is definitely a hero to fall in love with. A sort of Robin Hood to the villagers.
Even though the direction this book is going in seems pretty obvious, the fun part is getting to the destination (the last page!) This book had me smiling and practically on the edge of my seat. Of course characters from the other two books in the series are in this one and that adds to the fun. This was definitely my favorite of the three books. It was completely enjoyable. (It is comparable to the Mallory Novels by Johanna Lindsey.) You will love the characters just as much. I can't say enough about this book except that it is a MUST READ!!!
(I would also like to see more books written that involve these characters)

A delicious historical romance

Ten years ago Nicola Falcourt watched in disbelief as her beloved Gil Martin, a groom, and the Earl of Exmoor, Richard Montford, fought. Her incredulity changes to anguish when Gil fell off the cliff and died. A grieving Nicola kept the engagement ring that Gil gave her close to her heart while never forgiving Exmoor for causing the death of her sweetheart.

Nicola has stayed away from Exmoor even though he married her sister Deborah. In 1815 Nicola finally agrees to visit in response to Deborah's urgent plea to help her through her pregnancy in light of three previous miscarriages. On the way to Exmoor, The Gentleman stops her coach, robs Nicola, and steals a kiss. To her guilt as she has stayed loyal to the memory of Gil, she liked the kiss and soon learns he is a popular Robin Hood-type figure. The Gentleman keeps showing up in a weird courting of Nicola and soon they fall in love, but her safety becomes questionable since Exmoor wants the Gentleman dead.

NO OTHER LOVE is an exciting Regency romance filled with non-stop action and an entertaining rogue of a hero and an intrepid heroine. The story line never slows down, as Nicola seems to land in one predicament after another mostly caused by The Gentleman. Though extreme, Exmoor comes across as 100% pure evil, making him the oppositey of the lead couple and the catalyst moving the plot forward. Fans of the sub-genre will find Candace Camp's latest tale quite enjoyable.

Maybe 4 & 1/2 stars; excellent resolution to series

Each book in this trilogy improved upon the last. Readers of the first 2 books will welcome Nicola's turn at love -- and will enjoy meeting "The Gentleman" highwayman again. Although Jack's distrust of Nicola is sometimes annoying, his sensitivity and goodness overcome it. Their passion ignites the pages, and the suspense is dealt with a sure hand.

The saga of evil Richard is concluded satisfactorily, and it is indeed pleasant to have all the main players from the first two books here to take a hand in the outcome. Justice prevails, true love reigns supreme, and the good are rewarded with happiness.

After reading this one, I would consider rereading book 1 to see if I'd rate it higher now. I am left, thanks to book three, with a very pleasant, satisfied feeling.

One of the Best Nikon D80 Guides

The Nikon D80 was designed for people like me: Jumping from an advanced digital point & shoot to this excellent SLR- both using Secure Digital cards. I'm not a pro, but I have a moderate knowledge of digital cameras. The Nikon D80 Digital Field Guide fits the type of consumer that Nikon targeted for the D80.

This book is an attractive supplement to Nikon's D80 instruction booklet. Nikon's booklet is factual but the organization is fragmented. With Nikon's booklet, new D80 users will spend more time flipping pages than taking pictures. With the D80 Digital Field Guide, facts are presented in an organized, clear, concise, and easy to understand manner. A pro that have been using digital SLR's for years wouldn't need a book in this genre, but I did and have found this book extremely useful!

I did receive a very early edition of this book. It is true that there are missing hyphens & a wrong USB port photo. Books like this are rushed for publication because Nikon will eventually make a replacement for the D80 that will make this book obsolete. That's the nature of technology today. Looking past the first printing errors, I find that the good far outweighs the bad- therefore the 5 star rating. The few mistakes are very obvious and repetitive. They do not deter the user from learning the D80 and photography. I suspect that printing errors will be corrected in later editions.

This color guide is attractive and formatted like a Frommer's travel guide. The price (an amazing $13.59 at Amazon) also makes it a bargain in comparison to other books in this category. I highly recommend this book.

Great Basic Guide

Busch's field guide provides all of the essential information one needs to fully operate and appreciate the D80's features. In addition Busch provides several chapters that help you get the most out of your camera. I'm an advanced amateur who is new to digital photography. I've read a couple of other books on the D80 but this was the best.

Pure, concise, informative and well thought out!

O.K. here's the deal. You go out and purchase a Nikon D80, bring it home, open the box and begin to pour through the manual. About 1-2 minutes in you begin to yawn and do your best to keep your head up. You begin to nod off gaping at the one-dimensional black and white figures on the page accompanied by droll (and vague) language seemingly devised in legalese by out-of-work lawyers. You fight to remain conscious while the right side of your brain hopes you'll gather all the neceassary information through osmosis.

Fast forward to David D. Busch's "Digital Field Guide". Information and illustrations that leap from the page and grab you by the lapels and enlighten you like a Buddhist monk at your local monastery. It's all covered here. And let's face it we can use all the help we can get in this digital new frontier. Basics like exposure, lighting and composition. Also types of lenses, ISO settings, aperture or mode, shutter speed and tips on downloading and editing your photos. You have a great camera in the Nikon D80. You need a great guide to get you where you're going. You wouldn't buy a Porsche and place a VW engine in it.You want the best to go with the best. The same applies here. This guide has all the essentials. Ya gotta buy it. After all, you're worth it.

Best art history reference for most people..

This is a wonderful book and, in my humble opinion, a better book for most users than the big textbook edition "History of Art". The only complaint I have about this edition is its name; I feel it should be titled "History of Art: Concise Edition" as "History of Art for Young People" makes it sound too much like a children's book. While certainly suitable for an intelligent child, it is a superb art overview and reference for all people.
If you desire a general art reference you won't go wrong with this gem and you'll not find anything better. I have the 3rd edition also and it is excellent but this 6th one is greatly expanded (e.g., lots more photos and color) while retaining the user-friendly nature of the earlier editions. The text is clear and interesting, not written in the dry, boring style of a textbook. The printing and reproductions are top-quality. This art book is truly itself a masterpiece!

Great beginner or advanced book on art.

Originally got this book for a class my wife was taking. she dropped out of the class but we kept the book because it is so wonderful. Lots of great pictures and extensive information. Nicely bound and the slipcase is a bonus. A favorite on our coffee table and a great addition to our collection. Proved very valuable later when I took an art history class. We used a different book but I found myself going back to this one for its great pictures and presentation of the art.

The blurry line between mysteries and thrillers gets even fuzzier in this outstanding anthology of 32 new stories by such top genre names as Lee Child, James Grippando, Denise Hamilton and David Morrell. Patterson, in his introduction, talks about the "intensity of emotions" that thrillers share—as well as "the force with which they hurtle the reader along." This description fits such fine efforts as Gayle Lynds's "The Hunt for Dmitri," which takes the heroine of The Coil, Liz Sansborough, into an adventure involving her father, the infamous CIA assassin known as the Carnivore. But other extremely readable stories, like Alex Kava's "Goodnight, Sweet Mother," would qualify as straight mystery. Readers who favor one category or another may at first be a bit baffled, but lovers of crime fiction in general and well-told action tales in particular will be well rewarded. Thrilled to have this one available!

There are a few reasons you should read this book. First, it is likely you will get a taste of the writings of authors you otherwise would not have ever tried.
Second, there are variations here on what defines a "thriller." Don't be prejudiced by your own definition of the term -- read these with an open mind to possibilities.
Third, if your life is as hectic as mine, it is great to be able to dip in for 20 or 30 minutes and enjoying a complete quality story; there are many of them in this collection.
Finally, many reviewers here write about how the collection was weak except for... and then they name the few stories they think were best. Peruse the reviews and you will see they are not all the same few stories... all in all, most of the stories were enjoyed by someone here! Which is to say that the lower ratings are because of TASTE, not QUALITY. Enjoy the breadth, indulge in your favorites, and don't be deterred by the selective ratings of the reviewers here.
A quality anthology -- can't wait for Vol 2!!

An astounding work of short fiction

THRILLER, an anthology of short fiction --- where all contributions are from members of the International Thriller Writers Organization --- is, if you will, a literary annual report, a statement of where the thriller genre is at the present time and where it is going. In concept and execution, it's nothing less than perfect: 30 stories from 32 authors, the majority of which has never seen publication before. Together, they create an exhaustive compendium of the breadth and range of the subject matter and the depth of literary talent with which the genre is presently blessed.

When I think of the thriller genre, I generally think of works like David Morrell's FIRST BLOOD, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's THE RELIC, or literally anything Robert Ludlum ever wrote. The genre does not immediately or easily lend itself to shorter fiction. Yet each and every offering here illustrates what makes a thriller a thriller. The stories themselves simultaneously serve as an introduction to new readers while providing additional exploits to the canons of familiar characters.

Lee Child's "James Penney's New Identity" is an excellent example of this. Heretofore published with only very limited distribution, it includes a brief but pivotal appearance by Child's Jack Reacher. Readers unfamiliar with Reacher will find their appetites whetted for more, while fans of the enigmatic wanderer will enjoy the novelty of a story in which their protagonist is relegated to a supporting role. J. A. Konrath, on the other hand, uses "Epitaph" as a vehicle for Phin Troutt, a secondary character in his fine Jack Daniels series, not only shifting primary characters but also mood in this dark tale of double-barreled revenge.

Preston and Child, writing their first short story together (amazingly enough), have contributed "Gone Fishing." It serves as a solo tale for Vincent D'Agosta, usually seen in the company of Special Agent Pendergast. D'Agosta does quite nicely on his own in this chilling story that begins, simply enough, with the investigation of the theft of a rare artifact and ends...well, you'll have to read it to find out.

Obviously, it's difficult to pick a winner in a collection stuffed to the rafters with them. Stalwart authors such as David Morrell, Gayle Lynds and Eric Van Lustbader are featured; a long out-of-print, posthumous contribution from dearly-missed Dennis Lynds is included, as is "Man Catch," an unsettling tale of jealousy, betrayal and revenge from Christopher Rice. There are diverse, exciting stories from Chris Mooney, Alex Kava, Grant Blackwood and Brad Thor --- the work of these and other authors makes picking a favorite almost an impossibility.

If I had to pick one, however, it would be "The Portal" by John Lescroart and M.J. Rose. Lescroart and Rose normally fly solo, a state of affairs that makes the product of this collaboration --- a seamless, tightly drawn tale where things go from bad to awful --- all the more noteworthy. Rose's Dr. Morgan Snow is here, but only briefly --- and to greatly understated effect --- in a story that begins in New York and ends, catastrophically, in Lescroart's San Francisco.

By the way, if this list of authors is not enough reason to read this book, consider this. Each story is prefaced by an introduction from James Patterson that talks about both the story and the writer's work.

Now, consider this: I have not named even half of the noteworthy authors who appear in THRILLER. If you have a favorite thriller writer, prepare yourself for the thrill of reading one of their heretofore unpublished stories and the opportunity to put 31 new favorite authors on your reading list. And if you've never encountered the genre before, set aside a day or two and feed your mind at a rich and bountiful literary buffet. Highest possible recommendation.

Thrillerish allsorts

Thriller, edited by the ubiquitous James Patterson, is the first publication of the recently formed International Thriller Writers Inc. To publicise (and help fund) the ITW, Patterson has compiled a collection of thirty stories donated by well-known thriller writers, all using "a familiar character or plotline" from their novels.

Unsurprisingly, the result is something of a mixed bag. Not all novelists are masters of the short story form, and many of these writers seem uncomfortable within its confines. Some of the stories skimp on characterization, and some on plot; some work well as stand-alones, but others rely too much on the readers' knowledge of characters and organizations from the writers' novels. That said, there are some gems inside.

Patterson leads with one of the strongest stories: `James Penney's New Identity', by Lee Child. Penney, a Vietnam vet, suffers from post-traumatic syndrome, and has been retrenched after seventeen years in the same job because of a poor attendance record. Going slightly crazy, he sets fire to his house before fleeing in his prized Firebird, but the fire spreads. Soon he's wanted for arson - and then, he encounters military cop Jack Reacher. It's a neat little tale, and all you need to know about Reacher for it to work is his idea of honour.

J. A. Konrath's `Epitaph' is less surprising, but it's a well-written and punchy story involving Phin Trout, one of the colourful sidekicks of Whiskey Sour's heroine "Jack" Daniels. In James Rollins's amusing and fast-paced `Kowalski's in Love', Sigma Force's heroic but less-than-brilliant Joe Kowalski has to fight his way past booby traps and rabid baboons to loot a mad scientist's island laboratory before the Brazilian government fire-bombs the place. In F. Paul Wilson's `Interlude at Duane's', unarmed career criminal Repairman Jack has to hunt for improvised weapons in a drug-store held up by a heavily armed team of enthusiastic amateurs; the action is frantic, and the results gruesome, but the tone is light-heartedly anarchic.

More serious is James Siegel's `Empathy', a grim and claustrophobic stand-alone about a masseuse who suspects that a client is a paedophile, but lacks proof. David Morrell's `The Abelard Sanction' features a tense armed stand-off between enemy spies in a sanctuary; it starts with several pages of background, but Morrell manages to make this as interesting as his conflicted characters. Dennis Lynds's `Success of a Mission' and Grant Blackwood's `Sacrifical Lion' are well-constructed accounts of dangerous undercover missions - one in the Middle East, the other in Stalin's Russia.

Two of the stories make use of the September 11 attacks and their aftermath. David Dun's `Spirit Walker' pits Tilok tracker Kier Wintripp against the Anthrax letter bomber, and in Steve Berry's `The Devils' Due' - one of the gems in the collection - Osama Bin Laden arranges a meeting with Cotton Malone and offers to surrender.

For fans of historical conspiracies, there is Katherine Neville's `The Tuesday Club', in which Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson look for secret messages in `Frere Jacques'. David Liss pits 18th century thief-taker Benjamin Weaver against a cunning highwayman, and Ted Bell spins a yarn of Napoleonic-era sailors and pirates in `The Powder Monkey'.

Christopher Reich's `Assassins' and Robert Liparulo's `Kill Zone' are little more than character studies, but Liparullo does a particularly good job of showing us the viewpoint of police sniper Byron Stone.

Alex Kava's `Goodnight, Sweet Mother' and John Lescroart and M. J. Rose's `The Portal' are both enjoyably twisted, but Heather Graham's `The Face in the Window' is rather predictable. Michael and Daniel Palmer's `Disfigured' is an intriguing tale of a deranged kidnap plot, but needed to be at least twice as long.

James Grippando's `Operation Northwoods' feels more like a teaser for his next novel - as do Gayle Lynds's `The Hunt for Dmitri', Brad Thor's `The Athens Solution', and Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child's `Gone Fishing', despite their promising beginnings.

Chris Mooney's `Falling', Denise Hamilton's `At The Drop of A Hat', Christopher Rice's `Man Catch', and M. Diane Vogt's `Surviving Toronto' all feel more like compressed novels, with too many scenes and characters reduced to ciphers and most of the tension left out. Raelynn Hillhouse handles the short story length better in `Diplomatic Constraints', an exciting prologue to `Outsourced', but I still felt I was missing something.

This book is rather like a smorgasbord for thriller readers. Even if you don't like everything on offer, chances are you'll find something you'll want to try again.

Brand loyalty comes from this shared purpose

Why are some people crazy for Apple products and others scornful? I see it every day. One person will post something--pro or con--and the crazy Apple people respond with iPhone this and iMac that, followed soon by an equally virulent screed from the anti-Apple people. The same is true for Google products.

I think Nilofer Merchant may have discovered the root cause. Apple people and Google people and Microsoft people have not bought these vendor's products; they've bought their vision. In 11 Rules for Creating Value in the #SocialEra, Nilofer Merchant writes:
The social object that unites people isn't a company or a product; the social object that unites people is a shared value or purpose. Purpose is a better motivator than money. Money, while necessary, motivates neither the best people not the best in people. Purpose does.

This is true for your employees and it's equally true for your customers.

Apple's value is elegant, seamless solutions. They've chosen to do it in a relatively "closed" way, which is what annoys the Anti-Apple people. Apple products don't do everything but what they do, they typically do well. Google products, by comparison, are "open" and that's great. But it also means that apps look different from one another and integrate with different levels of elegance. Microsoft products have never claimed to be elegant; they're workhorses. Business runs on Microsoft. You know sharepoint is a mess but you also know it'll be supported in the years to come. You and your IT folks may explore alternatives but, in the back of your minds, there's always this idea that Microsoft will still be there and maybe your alternative won't.

Brand loyalty comes from this shared purpose between vendor and client.

Great, but still a corporate business book

I read this book because everyone on God's green earth said it was the future of business, that and I've seen Nilofer speak, and think she's brilliant. But I can't give this book 5 stars. Being a solopreneur in the social space a lot of what Nilofer had to say either felt like something I already knew to be true or didn't apply to me. Regardless of her subtle wit, it's still a business book, written for people who read business books, written for people in the corporate culture. If you are steeped in corporate or consult for corporations (or want to consult for/change corporations) this book might hold some real value for you. However, if you are a solopreneur like me, you may want to skip this one and wait for what I hope is a book for people like us.

Traditional Strategy Dies in The #SocialEra

Bravo to Nilofer Merchant for writing such an honest book that looks reality right in the eye, while extending her hand and inviting it in.

We are all experiencing what it is like to be at an inflection point in business and as a society as a whole. We are straddling two worlds while making moves that will ultimately determine which direction our own curve(s) will go.

In 11 Rules for Creating Value in the #SocialEra, Nilofer Merchant tackles this dynamic topic with conviction, clarity and grace, while giving the "#SocialEra" a face.
In Chapter 3 she writes,
1. At the organizational level, we will shift from hierarchies to networks and thus free "work" from "jobs"
2. At the human level, power will be distributed instead of centralized in the hands of a few, which will allow groups to self-organize through shared purpose
3. At a philosophical level, this will mean a shift from closed and separate approaches to open and connected ones
4. At a symbolic level, the shift is from being the 800-pound gorilla to a herd of 800 gazelles, where communities-made up of regularly unique individuals-create value

Of everything that we have been experiencing, discussing, reading or writing about over the past couple of years, Nilofer Merchant has pushed beyond, offering up new rules for creating value as we work to reformulate our future strategies.

She provides ideas as we navigate through uncertainty while motivating us to break out of any paralysis that might be holding us back and encourages us to take action - as organizations, as individuals and as a community...A wake up call, so to speak, so rich with depth.

This is the first book that I have read from her, and I can tell that she will be one of authors and leaders who I will reference as a key influencer in business history twenty or so years from now.
