I'm so glad to see this book published again!
By E. M. Lefavour
This is the story of a little boy named David who despairs of having a real Christmas up on a lonely mountain away from his family and home. However, guided by a fairy "locked-out" from Ireland for the winter (and dressed in a squirrel skin,) he is led to the homes of the few other outcasts on the mountains that his old nurse and guardian refers to as the "heathens." In each home he finds a neighbor with a wonderful story of Christmas instead. The book includes two Irish tales, an African American one (written in a fun dialect), a story from Spain, another about gypsies, and one about Santa and the Christmas that almost wasn't. Of course it ends with everyone being brought together and making a truly unforgettable Christmas for each other instead of the lonely one each had thought lay in store.
The main character, David, is quite an understandable and likable child, the folk stories are a wonderful addition to the mix of Christmas stories to tell, and the frame story is enchanting in its own right. Ruth Sawyer has a wonderful way with words and expresses the mind of a child well. This story was first published in 1916 so it does contain some descriptions that would not be seen as politically correct, but it would be a shame if this kept anyone from enjoying this book since the overall message really is that of overcoming prejudices and finding family even in those least like ourselves.
I have known This Way to Christmas well since I was a very little girl, but for years it seemed no one else did. It makes a wonderful "read-aloud" book with a beautiful nostalgic Christmas feel to it, and in our family it has stood the test of time. My grandfather read the story to my mother and her brother when they were children more than fifty years ago, and my mother read it to my brother and I every Christmas for many years of my childhood. We all know it inside-out, and still it continues to be enjoyable to read. Several years ago my mother actually typed the whole thing out so we could all have a copy and a few years later, I bought two extra old editions on the internet so we could each have one. I am very glad to see that it has now been republished so a whole new generation can get to know it. I highly recommend it. Why not start a family tradition of your own and read it aloud at Christmas?

Beautiful, engaging, but of its time
By Miss Otis
We have read this book every year since I was a child. Our family copy is an original printing and I love the stories. My favorite one is about the clockmaker, and, honestly, every time we read it both my dad and I cry. Every single year.
This Way to Christmas is the story of a boy sent to the countryside to avoid bombs during WWI. He is sad and lonely, until he meets wonderful people from all over the world, who tell him wonderful Christmas stories from all over the world.
My mom read these when I was younger, and I didn't know she was changing the language. Eventually, of course, I wanted to read it myself. In my family copy, you can see that when I was in the 4th grade or so, I went through the entire book and crossed out every use of the n-word and wrote in African-American. Which is really funny, because that character is a black man living in England. He might have called himself many things in England during WWI, but African-American would not have been one of them. The black man is portrayed with pathos. The point of the story is that all these people originally identified as "heathens" are kind, loving, generous people and we find Christmas by getting to love people who are different than us.
I still think this is the most beautiful Christmas book I know. But the use of the N-word throughout a book, primarily for children, about Christmas may be difficult and confusing. Again, I LOVE this book. But you should be prepared.

One of the best Christmas stories ever, told by a great story teller!
By Janis Tolbert
Ruth Sawyer tell every story in a way that embraces and engages the reader, and transports them to the world she is depicting. This one is a tale of a young boy and his search for the feeling and experience of Christmas when he finds himself in a situation without all of the familiar trappings -- including his parents. Woven into this tale are additional tales that stand alone and yet carry the full story to its fulfillment. Read it every year!
