March 1, 1992 Booklist review:
This rollicking fantasy has it all: an exciting plot, a likable hero, an evil warlock, a powerful wizard who's "just a girl," tiny sandmen who sound suspiciously like leprechauns, hordes of awful creatures, and a kindly giant who isn't tall. Nine-year-old Eddie has a terrific imagination. That's why he's able to catch Sandy, the sandman. Though initially shocked that Eddie can see him, Sandy recovers quickly and invites Eddie to Dreamland, assuring him that nothing can harm him as long as he's really asleep. Eddie accepts the invitation, but when the pair reach Dreamland, they learn that Mortimer, the evil warlock, has tainted the sleep sand so he can steal Eddie’s imagination. The only one who can help Eddie now is the wizard Beni, and the expedition to find Beni results in one adventure after another. Middle-school fantasy lovers won't be able to put this book down, and older readers will also enjoy the puns and silly situations—even though Eddie is only nine. A wonderful read-aloud.

"bright, original...swift and involving."

"a spell binder... This is a fairy tale for children of all ages."
—Abilene Reporter-News
Nine-year-old Eddie has such a wonderful imagination that late one night he catches a Sandman who escorts him to Dreamland. Once there, he learns Mortimer has cast an evil spell on the Sandman's sand with one diabolical aim: to steal Eddie's imagination. Eddie's only hope to break the spell and get back home safely is to find the last good wizard in Dreamland. During that journey, he encounters many perils in his desperate race against time.
All of this happens because Eddie is not asleep as he should be. Eddie is Wide Awake in Dreamland.
Conjuring memories of such classics as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, John Duel’s Wide Awake in Dreamland celebrates its 20th anniversary as a treasured favorite in the library of children’s literature. From the whimsy of the clueless but well-meaning Sandmen to the terrifying Trogs, Wide Awake in Dreamland packs its page-turning story full of adventure. Booklist said “this rollicking fantasy has it all” and those words are as true today as they were when the book was first published in 1992.

Gr 5-6-- Nine-year-old Eddie catches a tiny Sandman in his bedroom and is transported by him to the country of Sandmen, Dreamland. Unfortunately, because of a spell put on the magical sand of Dreamland, he has arrived there in a waking state, which makes him vulnerable to the attacks of the evil warlock Mortimer. The baleful villain plans to steal Eddie's imagination, killing him in the process. To break the spell and return home safely, Eddie embarks on a dangerous journey with his own personal Sandman and other companions he picks up on the way, encountering flying sharks, a small giant, and the most powerful wizard in Dreamland, who turns out to be a little girl in a frilly blue dress. The final showdown pits Eddie and his friends against Mortimer in the warlock's own castle. Although the book has an appealing, snappy title and a number of interesting paradoxes, it is marred by pedestrian writing, forced attempts at humor, occasional bad grammar, and annoying dialect (``I thoughtcha saidcha saw sharks before''). It is a collection of clever ideas, poorly executed. --Lyle Blake Smythers, Library of Congress, Washington, DC FOREMAN, Michael & Richard Seaver. The Boy Who Sailed with

Excellent Fantasy story
By M. Toyoshiba
I read this book as an adult several years ago. I am a fan of fantasy books like Wrinkle in Time series, The Narnia Cronicals, and now the Harry Potter series. This book is as good, if not better then those. I now have children of my own and I just finished reading it to them and they love it. My daughter, like me, wish that there was a book 2, 3, 4,....
In my youth I had the distict pleasure of working for a time with Mr. John Duel and I think back often with fond memories of his amazing wit, creativity, patience, and humanity.
I hope some day he will add to the Dreamland story. We are patiently waitng.

A story about friendship
By S. Perkins
Both my daughter (9 years old) and I enjoyed this book very much. The story is engaging and fun, and we found ourselves immersed in Eddie and the Sandman's story. We really liked all of the creatures that Eddie meets along his journey, and were on the edge of our seats as the Clock Lock approached. Most importantly, we learned about friendship as Eddie wins over a Giant with his prized Giants baseball cards, and has to overcome his bias against "girl wizards". The friends would never have made it through all of the obstacles on their journey without trusting each other. Highly recommend!

wide awake is a miracle
By Lamar Holley
John Duel's Wide Awake in Dreamland is mesmerizing and fascinating -- with ingenius plot, non-stop action, realistic character development, and fantastic settings. For me, it equals my other favorite children's novels, The Chronicles of Narnia and A Wrinkle in Time. Just imagine -- what if you were dreaming, but you couldn't wake up?
